My own thoughts on unions, education and public finance.

The filibuster/reconciliation cycle gives a majority one bite at their agenda. They pass a pile of stuff instead of a steady rhythm of accomplishments. Hard to unpack. I suspect some of its more virtuoso practitioners in Senate are attached to it. But its a sign of our polity's sickness not health.
But a grant would have worked better and would have centered the role the public was playing. Why not do a grant? Reconciliation rules wouldn't allow it. Same reason why you couldn't raise the minimum wage in the IRA. 3/4
There's funding to help schools and non profits do solar and heat pumps. It comes as a refundable tax credit to reimburse a portion of the costs paid up front. Its very complex and a testament to the skill of Sen. Wyden et al. 2/4
This thread from @michaelhobbes.bsky.social is right. Because the IRA was done via reconciliation, its heavy on tax credits. I think that adds a level of complexity, It also makes the taxpayer, not the public more generally, the central actor in a way that obscures the Democrat's role. 1/3
This right here, this exact sentence, is THE problem in American political journalism.

The IRA *was* cheap energy and good jobs! That was the whole bill! Democrats did precisely what political pundits are telling them to do and the pundits just ignore it.
I think he'd have made it w/o the stache. Too much wind resistance.
I did not see that coming. Also did not really know who Glenn Powell was. And goodness, Schneider has a stache.
I'm from a time when they could help you realize that, maybe its a risky bet to put money behind that ballot initiative this year. That you had more work to do before it was your time.
I always appreciate when people are sharing their expertise. And yours is generally helpful and sadly particularly helpful in the moment
States face tough fiscal times in the next couple of years, in part because of the federal administration's budget irresponsibility. People on Medicaid are going to take that hit. Frontline public workers are going to take that hit. Football coaches, not so much.
If I was a state legislator, I'd introduce a bill capping future buyouts for head coaches at state schools at a reasonable level. Coaches get high compensation ostensibly in part because there's risk. Part of our problem in society is a culture of bailing out the elites.
This week's episode of Law and Order, entitled "Bend the Knee," was, without naming it, about Trump's impact on the rule of law. Its the first decent pop culture depiction I've seen of what's going on.
They're leaning into positive reinforcement
He's got a whole other wing he could knock down!
I didn't realize @aaronregunberg.bsky.social was writing for TNR, or here. This on Klein is great, and he is worth following, particularly if he starts posting more about state politics and policy. H/T to @dkjrhi.bsky.social
“…asking the right questions, but pushing the wrong answers…”

This, from @aaronregunberg.bsky.social, is the smartest critique of Ezra Klein’s egregious era that I’ve seen.

What Is Ezra Klein Thinking?
The New York Times columnist is asking the right questions, but pushing the wrong answers.

Now witness the power of this fully operational ball room
Thibs started Jericho 37 times. But he certainly wouldn't go 11 deep with both Mitch and Josh out.
Glad to see Adam Silver is using game time to defend his tenure as commissioner. Interviewer asking him how tough it is that scandal is taking attention away from game, while they are taking attention away from game.
Three weeks ago he had a video touted as like a "reality check" for D's on Mamdani, and I was like "He won't get his tax bill through the legislature?" and it was "Candidate with double digit lead is actually leading."
Sending you some good thoughts.
Two anthems, and they'll boo one.
He hath forbidden his governors to pass laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation until his assent should be obtained, and when so suspended he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
The other, of course, is that a mass action like a general strike will be needed to save democracy before we're done. I don't think that's where we are yet, but I never thought it would be such a real question in my lifetime. And I take the speech as another warning light, one way or the other
There are two things going on here, I think. First is a broad strategy, predating Trump II, to align contract expirations to 5/1/28 so unions can exert more collective bargaining pressure. Lots of unions are agreed on this in principle.

This is an @ezralevin.bsky.social and @leahgreenberg.bsky.social appreciation post. Thank you for all the love and work you put in to make today happen.
Reminded of seeing EP King in Vegas. Ended his show singing a medley of, if I recall, the Ghetto and Battle Hymn of the Republic. Remember him saying "I don't think I'm the king or anything, but I think by sharing a few songs & memories, we can carry on in his great mission" So, maybe 1 king?
