Researching the National Guard of the #Batavian Republic is a lot of fun. This is a relatively unknown painting of a unknown officer around #1799 in his workroom. From an auction, kindly provided by the auctioneer.

Lot s of nice details like the silver (?) buttons and sash.

This goes for a lot of armies. I am not a competition wargamer and I just buy and paint armies I like, so some medieval Low Countries, or ancient near East. I know the dba lists are sometimes a bit of a joke, given the research that is available now.

Well, let’s face it, it is quite a British hobby :-)

But Early Medieval Europe deserves a lot more attention and Britain was of course linked to Europe in a lot of ways.
