What do you call the phase of the PhD where stuff actually starts to work? #phdchat #postdoc

I remain puzzled as to why some continue to trot out that academia is not the "real world". I have endless responsibilities, deadlines, expectations, and work long hours. This is my "real world" & I hope that my efforts over a long career contribute to improving the "real world" of others. 🧪

Did some field excursions with the local #mosquito control district here in WA looking for evidence of resistance; we collected thousands of Culex larvae despite only having 4 precipitation events this summer - how?
all of them were likely there directly from watering lawns and at home car washes

TAKE ACTION to write in opposition to the proposed rescission of the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule. This legislation would bring devastating and irreversible consequences in the health of our nations forests

Just a bonkers life history - I've seen this variation of sexual parasitism, but across species? Wild to see just the male genetic material becoming cloned 🧪 #evobio

Living organisms are assumed to produce same-species offspring. A study in Nature reports a shift from this norm in Messor ibericus, an ant that lays individuals from two distinct species. go.nature.com/3V68MP0 🧪
This is figure 2, which shows M. ibericus queens lay males from two different species.

Happy Friday! My morning has consisted of missing one bus, getting on a second bus that went the wrong direction and now I'm 45 min late to the lab - all because I wanted to buy donuts for the group
How's your morning going ☺️🌄

Do I write up a grant proposal that *likely won't* be funded but that would be awesome? Or do I write up the 'translatable' proposal with 'real world' action items that is kinda lame? #phdchat 🧪

From 2020 to 2022 COVID vaccines prevented over 18.5 million hospitalizations, 3.2 million deaths and saved the US $1.15 trillion.

mRNA vaccines and treatments are being developed for diabetes, HIV, cancer, and more. Imagine how many more lives we could save if we don't defund science.

I am ashamed to be american

our country, wrested from thee
Sweet freedom, liberty sold line-item yachts and jail emporiums

I am ashamed to be american

land of the incarcerated, home of the depraved

Yet America continues and I must be a part of her story
Today I am ashamed
Tomorrow builds anew
