Sure do! You come at it from both sides, though. Because perception is different from application. For example, a color rule of thumb is to use three distinct colors for a highlight, midtone, and shadow rather than simply one color + black or white. So you definitely look for those shifts.

Five years ago, my gut reaction to a comment like this would have been anger lol. I used to really hate, "I thought it was a photo" comments. Because that kind of language is so very close to "all you did was copy." And "you're just a machine," which is what I fear as an autistic person.
They're both beautiful and fantastic works. I think stylization might make it more memorable perhaps?

If I hadn't had read that other thread, I may've assumed these were simply photos.

I've mentioned this before but here's what I mean. The first drawing is unmasked—me taking full advantage of skills that come easily to me. The second drawing is masked—it has much more deliberately honed creativity and stylization. I worked hard for both. But how do you decide which has more value?

It's something I struggle with. Photorealism comes very easily to me. I don't have to think about it. But then I see articles—"Autistic man draws whole city from memory!" "You won't believe these aren't photos!" And that kind of stuff is so dehumanizing and off-putting. I find it terrifying.
I love all of your art but the realism is truly breathtaking in my opinion. It looks so dreamy and magical to me. If it is a function of how you see things, I think the way you interpret the world is fascinating

So for the most part, I don't paint the qualities of the photo. I usually undo it. It's part of how I stylize. If I use a screencap reference, for example, I'll deconstruct the palette and field curvature. That's pretty common. Sometimes I will add my own diegetic visual elements back in:

I'm afraid I don't know what you mean.
Great study!

Sorry if you've answered this before, but do you also paint in digital artefacts or plan to use the compression?

Always love to hear how people approach it (especially if coming at it digitally).

My favorite thing about Saturn is that its rings reflect sunlight onto the surface even during night. Can you imagine what this would look like from Saturn itself? Amazing.

My next presentable watercolor attempt, after a few more flubs and restarts. 😅 I still have a *lot* to learn, but I'm really enjoying the process along the way.

I haven't been asked a process question in a while! But it's just observational realism. Draw it by eye, little bit of a grid if I need it, otherwise freehand 💛

Throwback to this Blade Runner sketch. It's wild how I used to think I couldn't be autistic because I didn't stack cans or arrange my toys in a row. Kiddo, you definitely arranged something.

The fact that humans measure everything doesn't mean the universe must be be measured. Or that all you can do is measure it.

What I mean is. We measure time because we CAN, but the universe is under no obligation to make sense to us, certainly not according to how we decide to measure it.

I've been working in sketchbooks more as part of a class assignment; here are some of my recent sketches 👉👈 I've been trying to draw what comes to me in the moment, and not worry too much about the output or making everything perfect, but also put time into each to make it feel 'done' as a sketch.

My dad recycles the heavy duty paper covers his camera plates come in and uses them to clean his printing press, and he'll reuse them over over until they're saturated with ink. If he thinks they're pretty or might be good to draw on he'll give them to me LOL.

Feel bad for "summoned by mirror" entities. Oh, you didn't really want to meet me despite saying my name five times? Rude.

Good morning! Remember to hang in there—things are getting better even if you can't see it today. I know this because it once took twelve popes to ban striped clothing.

I genuinely love seeing amateur art because I genuinely love seeing how other people perceive things. To me, there's no information on earth more useful, more wonderful, or more enlightening than how other people process living.
