As we watch counterterrorism infrastructure be used to silence dissent and terrorize marginalized people, I want to re-up some of my analysis on how the law makes this possible and must be changed 👇
Remember when I warned that Trump could easily stretch the "counterterrorism" provisions of immigration law for mass deportations based on lawful peaceful political speech, or loose, involuntary connections to cartels?

This order basically promises they'll do just that:
NEW: The official USCIS guidance on this pause is out. Until further notice from the USCIS Director, all immigration benefits (including citizenship) are indefinitely suspended for nationals of 19 countries, as are all affirmative asylum applications from nationals of any country.

Today On Tap from me: Marco Rubio is selling a war of choice in Venezuela on falsehoods about narco-trafficking so he can get right-wing south Florida exiles who've been his political allies back into power. It's an incredibly parochial pretext for an imperial adventure.

Marco Rubio’s Sales Pitch: War in Venezuela - The American Prospect
Right-wing exiles in South Florida want regime change. Rubio is selling it with a false narrative about drug trafficking.

JAKE TAPPER: You called on Hegseth to release the full tapes of the attack. What sort of action are Democrats prepared to take to make this happen?

CHUCK SCHUMER: We hope that they will release the tapes.

I think some of you don't remember or weren't paying attention to how truly brutal and appalling Obama's drone strikes were

unirinically, one of Democratic leadership's most fatal problems is their incurable lameness
No value, no villain, no vision. Sounds like the tagline for the earnings call of a collapsing appliance retailer

wow also kind of seeming bad we never held anybody accountable for all those post-9/11 war crimes!!
hmmm it's starting to seem like bad precedent to normalize presidents being able to zap whoever they say is a terrorist anywhere in the world

not for nothing, just about the only thing Kamala Harris said on the campaign trail about changes she'd make to military policy was how she also wanted "more lethality"
A chapter in Hegseth’s book is literally titled “More Lethality, Less Lawyers.”

It’s almost as if there were signs!

If Trump does go through with his threatened invasion of Venezuela without Congressional approval, that should absolutely be grounds for immediate impeachment proceedings.

We would need mass, popular mobilization calling for his removal from office. It has to be a red line.

Let’s be clear: these are extrajudicial killings. “Kill them all” Hegseth needs to be held accountable.

What’s more, Trump promised the American people no new wars but is now manufacturing this conflict & lying about his motives.

This warmongering has got to stop.
Hegseth order on first Caribbean boat strike, officials say: Kill them all
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a verbal order to kill all crew members in the Sept. 2 strike on a suspected drug boat. Navy SEALs fired a second missile.

After the National Guard shooting, the US needs to reckon with how its legacy of global violence inevitably comes home. Stephen Miller wants to do anything but.

The DC shooting story is really getting to me because we literally trained this man as a child soldier for a death squad in a forever war and Stephen Miller et al want to blame it on other cultures? It's our culture, American culture, that killed that woman.

Essentially announcing there will be mass visa cancelations based on speech, ideology, and association - which our "counterterrorism" laws will make all too easy:

Hate to be posting this on a holiday, but there's been renewed interest in the CIA-backed Zero Units in Afghanistan. Here's a good summary of @propublica.org's 2022 reporting on the units and just some of the civilian casualties they were responsible for:

Deadly night raids. Faulty U.S. intelligence. A “classified” war loophole. Reporter Lynzy Billing’s investigation offers an unprecedented insight into the civilian casualties of Afghanistan’s Zero Uni...

the invasion of Afghanistan is among the most horrific recent chapters of the long history of elite impunity in the US. this coda is grim but fitting - the govt practically explicitly affirming that it should only be Afghans who live with the consequences amid fading public memory of the atrocity
It didn’t even take 6 hours.

it's common to think about the nuremberg tribunal as focused on war crimes & crimes against humanity. but especially when trump is using force on the seas & threatening it against venenzuela, it's worth remembering this: the first crime was aggressive use of force. www.un.org/en/genocidep...
