Day 10, Giant. Acanthamoeba polyphaga Mimivirus (APMV). the star-shaped feature appears on one side of the virus particle and is linked to a special pentameric vertex and capsomers are arranged at slightly offset angles doi.org/10.1371/jour....
Black and white ink drawing of a virus in a fairly realistic style of an electron microscopy image. The virus is a large slightly rounded hexagon with a star shape on the side facing you. the hexagonal shape is surrounded by dense hairs that stick straight out from the hexagon. The words "Giant virus" are written underneath

One of the cartoons in my new book 'Physics for Cats' which is out now in the UK, USA, Canada, France and Germany. Order from your local bookshops or online: www.tomgauld.com/
Two beetles on a stick.
One beetle says to the other "Do you ever get the feeling we are being observed by another lifeform"
Zoom out to reveal that they are in a glass case with two scientists studying them.
One scientist says to the other "Do you ever get the feeling we are being observed by another lifeform"
Zoom out into space. Abouard a spaceship, two aliens watch the scientists on a screen.
One alien says to the other "Do you ever get the feeling we are being observed by another lifeform"
The aliens turn to look out at the reader.

Text below the cartoon reads:
From 'Physics for Cats' by Tom Gauld. Preorder it at www.tomgauld.

#Inktober days 8 and 9 combined - Reckless & Heavy

The reckless use of antibiotics in humans, animals and plants is the main driver in the development of antimicrobial resistance pathogens.

As one of the top global threats, AMR places a heavy burden on public health.

#inktober day 7 - Starfish

Did you know that there are bacteria, called Stella vacuolata, with a star-shape ?

When autumn begins, they're usually two different mindests:
- Those who are already looking forward to the winter holidays 🎄
- And the fall lovers 🎃

The new viral season has now started. This is wastewater SARS-CoV-2 levels in the Netherlands.

The start is around the 2023/2024 season and there is a clear upward movement from the previous season (last week). This is in line with other countries and indicates the next wave

Day 7, Share. Inoviruses are filamentous single stranded DNA phages that can be produced continuously and exported by their host without lysis and killing their host. They have a single repeating major coat protein that covers their length and specialised spike proteins. #Drawtober #SciArt #Phagesky
Black and white ink drawing of two long filamentous phages. The one in the background is all the same distance away. In the foreground is a close up of the spike proteins of the closer phage with 5 repeated protein complexes forming what looks almost like a flower, the rest of the inovirus loops around into the background

The original plan was to isolate >50 phage-host combos (I naively thought this would be the straightforward bit of the project—it wasn’t). Eventually we got 2 phages tripling the number of genome-sequenced, in vitro characterised Strep. suis phages! Read about Bonnie & Clyde👇🏿

Lactobacillus, what a #LittleLegend !
Part of our gut and vaginal microbiome, this microbe is one of the most widely used #probiotics to treat diarrhoea and eczema. Thanks to Hiral Raval, a @microbiologysociety.org champion, for suggesting I draw this for #InternationalMicroorganismDay

Day 6, Sacrifice/Cry. Individual bacterium can sacrifice themselves to prevent phages reproducing and save the rest of the bacterial community. They can also send out quorum sensing messages to warn other bacteria. #Drawtober #SciArt #Phagesky
Black and white ink cartoon of a scared, shouting bacterium with wide eyes, it has a hexagonal phage particle on its back. The bacterium has its mouth open and is shouting, in a speech bubble coming is a skull and cross bones, the skull is hexagonal and looks a bit like a phage

This year I submitted a big transdisciplinary grant at the end of September and have now started the new semester’s teaching. I lacked a bit of motivation to draw and started a couple of days late! If I miss any days you can check out previous October art here: elliejameson.wordpress.com/inktober/
Ink drawing challenges
During October I have been taking on an art challenge to develop drawing skills and habits through undertaking an ink drawing every day in October, based on a prompt word. After posting some microb…

#inktober day 2 with #Weave

Cyanobacteria form interwoven patterns.

The micrographs from paper by J. Cammann et al, in Nat. Comm. Physics (2024) inspired me.

Today was less about googly eyes and more about focusing on the feel of my pens. Having fun by playing with different brush and pen sizes.
