This decolonising work is not just for BIPOC community, it is the job of everyone and white people to start to think about what they can do to decolonise not just DBT, but psychotherapy in general.

What a fab & original talk from @bodyandsoulcharity.bsky.social - really thought-provoking, & as a white person who has completed DBT years ago I feel ashamed that I didn't pick up on these nuances that are so white/euro centric. Definitely have a lot of food for thought from this talk

#BIGSPD25
elliewildbore.bsky.social
Conclusions:
-DBT operates as race, culture and systems are invisible
-Minimises and invalidates experiences - leading to internalising
-skills need to feel appropriate and effective
-BIPOC individuals shouldn't have to adjust the skills themselves.

#BIGSPD25

Theme 4: Challenging Eurocentric assumptions and notions: acknowledgement of influences eg buddhism & mindfulness, recognising individuals as part of communities instead of the emphasis on individualism,DBT book work choices reinforcing harmful stereotypes, removing racial assumptions

#BIGSPD25
elliewildbore.bsky.social
Theme 3: Integrating cultural considerations: including non-western examples of activities, understanding concepts in different cultural norms, cultural interpretations of body language ,tone etc. and adjusting skills to different cultural values.

#BIGSPD25
elliewildbore.bsky.social
Shocking fact: The word "racism" only comes up once in the DBT manual - and in the context of a white person overhearing racism under the theme "disgust", never in "anger" or "frustration" and always passive observation, not experiencing. The decolonised version changes this.

#BIGSPD25
elliewildbore.bsky.social
2 - sing skills effectively in the context of racism: assessing priorities of risk & safety to ensure skills are appropriate and validating to experiences of racism, how to use allyship effectively (e.g.checking the facts) &skills need to reflect the LX of navigating racism in daily life.

#BIGSPD25
elliewildbore.bsky.social
Themes that came out included:

1 - Integrating structural, systemic and intergenerational realities: stereotypes and systemic ideas about how black people are perceived can be a barrier to using certain DBT skills, as can intergenerational trauma

#BIGSPD25
elliewildbore.bsky.social
Despite increased risk of suicidality and self-harm for BIPOC, there are higher levels of dropout from DBT, and little evidence of the curriculum being adjusted appropriately.

@bodyandsoulcharity.bsky.social set about looking at how they could make the DBT curriculum more suitable

@bodyandsoulcharity.bsky.social are speaking about decolonising the DBT curriculum this morning Decolonising the DBT Curriculum. A comprehensive

Colour and have struggled with suicidality @bigspd.bsky.social
