I definitely agree. It's fun in cute bursts, but you should NOT be able to avoid/negate damage in an rpg. Dealing with damage is a massive part of engaging with combat in these games.
Bug Fables nails it I think. Low numbers, MINIMUM damage is 1, and blocking only reduces damage by 1 at default.
