In folklore, the short story was born around the fire. Parables, fairy tales, and legends - each one complete, self-contained, a spark meant to travel by word of mouth. #BookWormSat

Violet webcap (Cortinarius violaceus) growing under gorse today near the Devil’s Punchbowl in Surrey. An absolute stunner of a mushroom and nationally rare - it’s always good to see these beauties.

"The charity described the findings as a “catastrophic decline in Black representation”, and said the report revealed “stark inequalities” in UK children’s publishing."

One of the things about this study is that a lot of baby and toddler books are written in house, by editors. So the study reveals the whiteness of editorial in kidlit even if not explicitly. But, big picture, this trend is unacceptable. I remember so many promises www.theguardian.com/books/2025/o...
‘Catastrophic decline’ in Black representation in children’s books
A report by charity Inclusive Books for Children found that of the 2,721 books surveyed, only 51 featured a Black main character, down by 21.5% since 2023

Just started reading it, but I already love this book. The excruciating experiences of girls in middle school are spot on.

The author's name is Kim Harrington, hidden behind my public library's bar code.

The cover of the book, Revenge of the Red Club, by Kim Harrington. A silhouette of a girl standing on a table with fists of solidarity raised in the air around her, a megaphone, and a calendar in the background, with one day marked with an X. The background is all red, and tampons fly through the air around the title.

It's #WorldPorridgeDay 🥣

A man from Killin entered a Faerie Knowe (faerie hill) and found inside, a vat of porridge. It was boiling so fiercely that a lump of porridge struck him in the eye. He saw faeries in that eye thereafter🧚‍♀️

The alleged home tree of the Wood Sprite known as Blood Squall. His reputation is high among the fiercest and most troubling of cursers. His favoured appeasements are said to be the medicate wine Tor Tonic, items of pewter, chocolate raisins and teeth – human or animal.

Autumn markets once rang with the bleats of sheep, the bellow of cattle, and the hum of barter. Fair day was more than commerce. It was also reunion, gossip, courtship, and the year’s last great dance. #FolkyFriday

Old market songs carried the rhythm of hooves and haggling. Ballads like “Strawberry Fair” and “The Sheep-Shearing Feast” kept the spirit of autumn gatherings alive long after the carts were gone. #FolkyFriday
