that's the sort of weird thing about being who appreciates psychoanalysis as a discipline but doesn't work as an analyst, there is this mountain of theoretical work and clinical material that is interesting but you can't simply divorce it from the clinic and make judgments on it

maybe easier theorized than done but i think there's an interesting intersection to be explored between Kohut's self psychology and Fairbairn/Guntrip style psychoanalysis, i think there are a number of concessions to that type of analysis in the former's work anyways

At the beginning of the analysis of the self, Kohut differentiates the differences of specifically narcissistic pathology and schizoid pathology and i think that it's a sort of missed opportunity to really grasp the confluence of schizoid processes and narcissistic pathology in borderline states

i think maybe one of the biggest pitfalls of Kohut's work is his seeming experience with relatively well behaved and high functioning narcissistic clients and a sort of pessimism about the treatment of borderline patients who he believes are too regressed for self analysis
