The earliest common ancestor of the modern horse is the unsuspecting, five-toed Eohippus, which lived in the early Eocene about 52 mya.*

then, 40 mya in the early Oligocene, the now only three-toed Mesohippus grazed on fruits and leaves in the ancient North-American forest.

And finally, on Christmas day 15 mya in the Miocene, a very merry and chipper Merychippus galloped along the plains - spreading holiday cheer!**

a pair of warm and cute Eohippus for this cold winter

A digital drawing of Eohippus pair, doing the cute horse thing when they scratch and lick each others back. I thought that they could probably do that as well, like modern horses do now. They're colored light brown, with some white parts and warm shading. Almost all the head is white, they have pink noses and pink little hooves, and the main brown fur on their body is a mix of light and dark hairs, so it's quite contrasted. I actually took some inspo from hares for the colors. They stand on the dark background, a star is shining above them; next to the star are two little horses stylized sort of like cave paintings. It isn't anything i based this reconstruction of (also, it was too early for eohippus to be painted like this), just a little thing i wanted to try.

OK, decided to tweak it a little because me trying to parallel the animal with the figurine displayed horizontally obscured the fact that it had high shoulders and not a flat back 🙃

A lot of dinosaurs
(November 2023)

A mass of dinosaurs drawn in a simplified style fills the canvas. The dinosaurs are very roughly organized by how long ago they lived; the oldest dinosaurs sit towards the bottom of the piece, and the most recent towards the top. Eventually, the non-avian dinosaurs are cut off and the upper third of the piece is filled with avian dinosaurs/birds.

- the 'ear tufts' on Jeholopterus are inspired by owls!
- When designing the yutyrannus, I got a really cool 3D fossil replica of the skull from EverythingDinosaur (dot com) ...That's not really a cool fact, just a cool thing i own lol😂 everyone should have a yutyrannus skull on their desk
