Some Democrats are urging 88-year-old Eleanor Holmes Norton, the delegate who has represented Washington, D.C. in Congress for 18 terms, to step aside after more than thirty years as DC’s only voice in Congress. The delegate for DC is a non voting member of Congress but is still able to deliver speeches, call for press conferences, introduce bills and speak on behalf of her constituents—D.C. residents say Norton hasn’t even been able to do that. Critics say Norton hasn’t been visible enough during Trump’s federal takeover of the capital, arguing the city needs “a new champion” to take on threats from the White House. Supporters say Norton is a civil rights icon, she helped organize the 1963 March on Washington and was the first woman to lead the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and that she’s earned the right to retire on her own terms.Norton, the oldest member of the House, has already decided to run again in 2026 to serve a 19th term. But already two members of the Washington D.C. city council have announced they will run against her including one of her former staff members. Robert White Jr., a former Norton aide, and Brooke Pinto have each launched campaigns to unseat Norton and have urged her to step aside rather than fight to stay in office.Norton’s former chief of staff, Donna Brazile, even wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post where she urged her former boss to retire. “As I’ve told her in person,” Brazile said, “retirement from Congress is the right next chapter for her — and for the District.”Norton still refuses.
