Which Democrat in the current Senate besides Chuck Schumer *wants* to be minority leader? The job is herding cats (Democrats plus Angus King and Bernie Sanders) and making sure that they stay united in opposition to fascists. The job is also negotiating with the majority party! I wouldn't want it.

I disagree that it damages Republicans as much as Krugman believes. Seems like their cruelty makes them an attractive choice for 40% or more of voters as long as those voters think the cruelty targets others. People who think no one but themselves is deserving.

What does banning DEI mean in a country that’s majority non-white and seeking to do business with the US? Not sure they thought this one through…
1/ The Trump Administration is seeking to force foreign companies worldwide to ban diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programmes within their firms if they want to do business with the US government. It's an aggressive expansion of its anti-DEI crusade. ⬇️

Backlash is a repeating theme in US politics. Between 1865 and 1877 (Reconstruction), the US had 3 Black senators and 21 representatives in Congress, most from the South. Then there was backlash - Jim Crow - and Black voters were disenfranchised. No Black person was elected Senator again until 1967.

Our grants & contracts office sent out this list of taboo words for grant proposals. Roughly one-third of US adults voted to take the US back to 1877 & legally sanctioned segregation, but are the remaining two-thirds just going to go along with this? In 2025, as the rest of the world moves forward?

This is a richly imagined page turner: local gods form corporations & gain or lose market share based on the number of followers who pray to them. Features a heist at the British Museum (of a stolen Yoruba relic). Not sure I care for the succubus angle, but otherwise a great read.
