My NLM-funded #diabeticretinopathy project used #AI/ML on #EHR data for outreach to at-risk diabetic patients in the LA safety net who missed a guideline-recommended eye examination. Increasing safety net DR screening rates is a pressing need to prevent blindness.

When US “media” are almost completely owned by a handful of oligarchs plus corporations seeking to grow via mergers that require the approval of the regime, the notion of a free press is pretty much nonexistent.

It’s difficult but not impossible for a democracy to survive without a free press.

Germany, the UK, Pakistan, India, Israel, Liberia, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, Jamaica, Namibia and Bangladesh have all elected female heads of state at some point in their history, but the US just can’t seem to do it.

Sociopaths like Russ Vought who “want to put [federal workers] in trauma” always forget that their time in office will come to an end. He doesn’t get to define what the government does forever and his excesses will bring about a predictable backlash and increased federal worker protections.

Vought, a self-described Christian nationalist who served as the director of the Office of Management and Budget in Trump’s first term, was known for his provocative public pronouncements. But he went even further in private, envisaging a Trump presidency in which regulatory agencies would be shut down and career civil servants would be too depressed to get out of bed.

“We want the bureaucrats to be traumatically affected,” Vought said in one recording. “When they wake up in the morning, we want them to not want to go to work because they are increasingly viewed as the villains. We want their funding to be shut down so that the EPA can't do all of the rules against our energy industry because they have no bandwidth financially to do so.

“We want to put them in trauma.”

No, I’m not delusional. I first smelled teargas in my primary school classroom when unarmed college student protestors fled armed federal police in terror & tried to take refuge at my school. It took 15 years for some form of democracy to re-emerge but it did. We will beat this *working together*.
