Very good thread on the latest labour market data 👇

Today's stories saying the unemployment rate has risen from 4.6 to 4.7% tell only part of the story. The same data - the Labour Force Survey - shows this rise comes from more people who were inactive starting to look for work and so being classified as unemployed, which is good news 🧵 /1

Nothing beats a working lunch (well, almost nothing): a very insightful lunch time session @easp-spa-2025.bsky.social on preliminary findings of the ongoing study of social policy teaching and learning, commissioned by @socialpolicyuk.bsky.social and led by Ruby Chau. Join the second round 👇

Brilliant first key note speech at @easp-spa-2025.bsky.social by Sophia Seung-Yoon Lee on the ‘melting’ of labour, the rise of precarities among the young, the drift of the social protection system - and the political consequences of it all. Covering all aspects of the conference theme in one go!

We had another excellent discussion at the Social Policy and Society Annual Event last week. Experts from across the UK - and in representation of the 'Policy Groups' within the @socialpolicyuk.bsky.social - came together to discuss one year of Labour Government and its impact on UK Social Policy.
enricoreuter.bsky.social
In short, a perfect illustration of the inherent complexity and ambiguity of social policy. (Also, how invigorating to engage in these discussions and at least temporarily, for 2 hours, escape the troubled world of UK higher education.)
enricoreuter.bsky.social
Beyond that a fascinating discussion of the multiple factors that explain why the chosen policy options have been chosen. Ranging from electoral strategy in response to public attitudes and ideological factors to structural constraints emerging from global economic conditions and path dependencies.

Tensions between Labour’s focus on ‘fiscal credibility’ and its wider ambitions for ‘national renewal’; focus on incremental changes over more radical reform ambitions; questions regarding the likelihood of success in achieving its aims.

It was a great session, with sharp and insightful contributions on diverse social policy areas (thanks to representatives from @socialpolicyuk.bsky.social policy groups) and a productive discussion afterwards. A few key themes emerged in my view: 👇

On my way to Derby to attend and co-chair this panel on Labour’s record (so far) regarding main social policy areas. More info below. And it’s hybrid, so still time to sign up 👇. Will post more later…

That awkward first post... I'm here now as well. Interested in social and public policy, labour market and employment issues (notably self-employment), teaching and learning in higher education, politics, a good dosage of art and culture.
