Michael Moynihan: Why, unlike other European cities, is Cork adding concrete to green spaces?
Cork’s revamped Bishop Lucey Park has drawn criticism for its concrete-heavy design, lack of greenery and failure to meet climate ambitions

Council never had the bottle to turn places like cornmarket street or Emmett place into city squares so they put the city square into the park instead.

I continue to oppose the principle of selling public green space for private development, the extension into Bishop Lucey Park is not even the worst thing about the whole mess. It should never have been built but the park now has so many other issues Cork will be dealing with for a generation. #Cork
I have views on the refurb of Bishop Lucey Park but will outline them another day. In the meantime, here's the extension of the masonic lodge into the park on public land sold for €1. #Cork

RIP Bishop Lucey Park
Only green space in city centre is no longer a green space
Seriously how did this cost €7million?
Its depressing & says Cork says f*ck biodiversity & climate
Ironically the one redeeming feature is that the railings & gates are gone to make it thoroughfare

Well, here we are.

Bishop Lucey Park has reopened after a two-year closure and redesign. And it’s very good to have this space available again.

I’m trying very hard to find the positives (there are some), but overall it is a sad failure for the public and for urban green space in Cork.

It's good to see Bishop Lucey Park open again and there are some nice elements but overall it's rather charmless, cluttered and over-engineered. Strap yourself in for a rollercoaster ride of a thread (1/n)🧵 #Cork

In a part of the city already suffering from a dearth of street trees, Cork City Council are cutting down their own. Here at the old Fire Station on Watercourse Road. Silver birch, Betula pendula, RIP.

Where's the fun in completing the census online? One of the joys of looking at old census returns is enjoying the handwriting. Sticking to paper here.
The next census will be conducted on Sunday, 9 May 2027.

For the first time, people will have the option to complete the census online, while paper forms will also be available. jrnl.ie/6871555
The date for Ireland's next Census in 2027 has been set (and you'll be able to fill it out online)
The last Census took place in 2022 after it was delayed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
