Éabha would a lot more common than Ava here. And you’d come across Aoibhe as well though some pronounce that the same as Eva..
Ive always noticed that but unfortunately you’re in a very small cohort. The so-called paper of record seems to be using far less direct language in recent years.
Even the theme song is like a warm hug. Its a beautiful show.
Thing is our last 3 presidents were more or less from the same mould as Catherine Connolly - not all perfect but since 1990 we have been lucky to have decent, inclusive people as our head of state. We don’t vote as smartly for the governing parties who actually run the country unfortunately
They did get some of their own policies on climate action implemented but gave way on too much. You can see the lack of a green agenda in the current government. Unfortunately small parties suffer going in with larger parties especially if their ideologies clash.
People are so afraid of change and I was probably one of them up to the mid 2010s but we need to see what a left leaning government can do. I also would add the Greens to that list if they can sort themselves out.
Im not anywhere near far left and plenty I know are the same but not a hope Id give them my vote
There was one particularly horrific one that the voter - seemingly a city councillor- posted on his own Insta.
This is possibly because they knew the general population wouldn’t like their platform but by going late, they now cry that they were blocked. That said there was poor choice and both parties of the government messed up badly.
A number of manbabies joined together to produce a slick campaign (backed by god knows who) as they weren’t happy as their candidate/s weren’t on the ballot - not acknowledging that they left it too late to garner the requisite support for nomination.
Sad to think that this is lots of young people’s first experience of voting - my son included. It was not a good look to have high profile supposed grown ups encouraging a spoiled vote. A meaningless protest but the governing parties and need to do better next time in candidate selection.
Maybe his estate should have stopped it with Marillion
Don’t think Tolkien would look too kindly on the interference with the night sky given his use of stars as symbols in his works
Same vintage and I think a lot of us feel the same way. Never really gave them my No1 or 2 but I haven’t voted for them at all for the last few elections.
Had to google that - not a patch on our fella is he?? Much better off naming their own species eg whipoorwill named after his call sound
I grew up in the city and herons robbing goldfish from garden ponds was all I saw of bigger birds. Way out in the sticks now and I will never get over the joy of seeing buzzards hovering and swooping. Also the privilege of meeting these guys on occasion
I now have that Stars on 45 theme leading into Funkytown in my head and I also feel old
Im from Cork & worked in a lab in Boston in the 90s with a friend from Kerry. One of our local colleagues was staring at us chatting one day. She said she was fascinated that we understood each other as it was so fast & so quiet. We realized how quickly we spoke & she realized how loud they were
All that money and she doesn’t put a decent bra under it 🙄
It’s wonderful- I was nervous in case it didn’t do the book justice but it looks like it definitely has. And those are the best Irish accents by non Irish actors Ive heard in a long time. Julia Roberts narration works really well too.
It was to mark the centenary of the Rising. Id say now it went right over most small heads. In fairness it was quite low-key, in our school anyway. Turns out HH was involved then too 😂

The Defence Forces will deliver an Irish flag to every school in the country for 2016 jrnl.ie/2010937
The Defence Forces will deliver an Irish flag to every school in the country for 2016
That’s around 4,000 schools, altogether.

They already did that in 2016 when my 15 yo was in Junior Infants so its not even a new idea. Army reps came in (one of the school Dads), read the proclamation and handed the flag to the eldest and youngest in the school.
Is she still going? Can only guess what rag is still giving her a platform
Groaned when I heard that. Its pursuit of wild animals for no other reason than notions (fox hunting) or gambling (hare coursing).
