Feeling NeurIPS FOMO! This year I've been doing less model training and more agent engineering, so the conference is harder to justify. But I miss the poster sessions, the hallway conversations, and the opportunity to take the pulse of the community! Maybe next year

I thought maybe Opus 4.5 would be good enough at pattern recognition that it might be able to look at a small LLM's weights and activations and steer it towards improvement on a use case - without using gradient descent. It didn't work, but I had it write up a paper: www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/l4nr1...

From what I gather, Ilya and SSI are working on finding the digital analogue to hormones. Which is a really, really good idea, IMO.

Having fun with ARC Raiders! I thought it might be too sweaty for me but it balances nicely to my poor skill, and the loot stash prevents total wipeouts. First multiplayer game to pull me in since Overwatch. Anyone else playing?

That feeling when you get kinda heated about a post and then realize it's a shitpost. In my opinion, shitposting is a socially corrosive act that erodes our psychological commons and leaves us more emotionally detached for the worse. Call me a millennial but I value earnestness.

Wow! I thought this number would be way lower, like 1-5%! I thought a whole lot more of y'all were wearing contacts and getting lasik. My model of the world was way off, that's kinda neat actually.

Karpathy throwing cold water on agents hype is good. I'm actually a huge believer in agents - Claude Code convinced me this year, and I maintain an orchestra of them at work. But hype and fear was getting totally out of control. Am also wary of hero worship, but at least Karpathy wields it well.
