Perfect day for this album. In 1963, the State Dept. sponsored Duke Ellington’s tour through the Near East and Japan. This resulted in one of the best recordings of one of America’s greatest artists - or, in the minds of DOGE’s high-tech barbarians, DEI waste.

Learned from @jonathanhealey.bsky.social’s history of the English Civil War that the idea of inalienable rights arose not from John Locke but irascible political street-fighter John Lilburne.

A good reminder of how these rights should be used: loudly and with great annoyance to those in power.

Spending time w/Thucydides this week. The conflict between Athens and Sparta finally broke out over a trade war; Athens' allies in the Delian League, formed after the Persian invasion, turned against the city due to its arrogance; and democracy was in conflict w/empire. Now to see how it all ended.
