Hello #fediverse! Thanks to my new DFF grant, I'm now looking to hire a PhD student to join me at AAU in Aalborg 🇩🇰 to work on "usable decentralization", i.e. on making distributed and federated cloud services accessible to the everyday user. For more details, see link below, and please don't […]

I am ever so slightly embarrassed, feeling a little foolish basically.

I have a Pebble classic (the original one). I stopped using it some time ago because the screen would end up corrupted after several hours of operation. I went out and bought a Garmin but still used the Pebble now and again […]

A few minutes ago, I was reading the editorial in the January issue of the Clarkesworld magazine, the last bit of content in the issue, when I received an email notifying me of February's issue being available for download! Great timing. Happy days.

I've just put it on my Kobo and now get to […]

@aoanla It's in a script and indeed nothing actually gets displayed (which is what I want). It seems as if Plots.jl creates a QT object of some sort, expecting to display it, but that object gets killed (or an attempt to kill it is made) when the plot object goes out of scope.

Good morning. Anybody here using the Plots.jl package for Julia? I am trying to generate some plots in files without having them display on the screen. I have a sequence of

````
plt = plot(...)
plot!(plt, ...)
plot!(plt, ...)
savefig(plt, filename)
````

which invariable leads to errors while […]

Finally! A sunny day. Crisp clear weather, lovely for an early morning 20 km cycle ride around Crawley.

@MegaMichelle Nah, still the same religious war as all others are ephemeral and not worth investing any mind-share on them. ;-)

I'm a little (well, quite a bit) annoyed at the illustration (by Eleanor Shakespeare) for Jonathan Freedland's column in today's Guardian: it is meant to show the US in the western hemisphere of the planet but the territory drawn includes significant parts of Canada (Vancouver, the whole Niagara […]

Today's weather forecast: "Light rain" followed by "Heavy drizzle" and then "Overcast", "Light rain", "Light rain showers". I love weather forecast terms. How does "Heavy drizzle" differ from "Light rain"?

Anyway, after yesterday's disappointment at not going out on my bike, I jumped at the […]

It's clear that the US president still does not understand how tariffs work. Or is simply lying again?
January 21, 2026 at 2:43 PM
"Canada should be grateful." 🤮
January 21, 2026 at 2:22 PM
@jfparis It is indeed. One lie after another. And Godwin's Law (or its corollary) has been invoked as well. You're not missing anything.

So the US president claims that China has no wind farms. China in fact has the largest wind power generator in the world (cf. Forbes and other sources). #fakenews #climatecrisis #renewableenergy #windpower

@jfparis Let's hope for better weather this weekend. The week's been pretty grotty so far. ☹️ Enjoy your new bike!
January 21, 2026 at 12:57 PM
@drdelle Glad to hear!

Cold, I can put up with, especially if sunny although, to be fair, it seldom if ever gets below -5 °C here! However, when it's chucking it down, riding is just plain miserable. I don't mind when it's drizzly or spitting as the waterproofs keep me dry.

I do ride whatever […]

@jfparis it's NewBikeDay+1 now: any update? 🙂

(I would have found an excuse to leave work early...)

Unhappy with myself: didn't go out for a ride this morning. The weather is simply miserable. I hate January. ☹️

It is incredibly challenging to pick my favorites from the past year. So many good stories. It would have been much easier to select the few I didn't particularly enjoy.

I've yet to read this month's issue... must get to it! […]

@mark I did an Emacs reboot last year. As part of that process, I moved from using org mode with babel to elisp directly. However, this month I went back to using org mode again to manage my Emacs init files, for two reasons: the one you mention and the easier navigation due to better […]

@jfparis It's the little wins that matter!

The rain (heavy) caught me yesterday (in London) on my morning commute but I was prepared (full waterproofs) so no big deal. 🙂

First ride of the year (not counting cycling on a fixed bike indoors). Cold and damp but no actual precipitation. Feel good and I'm glad I vanquished the inertia that was tempting me to stay in.

I'll hopefully get out most days this week, weather permitting.
