Well, this is pretty terrifying. The Daily Mail is buying the Telegraph.

One massive consolidated right-wing media empire controlled by off-shore interests at a critical moment in global politics.

What could go wrong?

Grandad died today, whilst giving a speech in Dublin, 1974. He was born 120yrs ago in Chelsea, London.

He grew up with a classic Anglo Irish duality; strong love for both cultures and parents that made sure he understood what Empire meant. What colonialism meant.

The politics of his parents…

We were very lucky to have him during the Decade of Centenaries. He has a nuanced and intelligent vision of the past and a deep understanding of the impact of violence and division on a nation. Real humanity.
He'll be missed.
Looking forward to a new chapter with Catherine Connolly. Another CC!

I have time for your book, but just understand that your POV on Dev isn’t the new benchmark for all to fall behind.

The best of writers have written about him, long before your book deal. Ireland has always had noisy historians and journalists. The choice being; which of those rubicons to cross.
Opinions still divided on Dev - and on documentaries about him! You can make up your own mind - Dev:Rise + Rule is available on the

The youngest they shot was 17. Ministers ordering teenagers to be killed. From every county in Ireland.

Great-grandad argued for home rule in public. The TimesUK archive documents this from the sort of 1895-1914 yrs.

More often than not, he knew that by saying that Ireland was a “colony” in that Pre-War time would draw out the stiff Unionist pov he was hoping to change.
Question for colleagues who know more about Irish history than me. Students of mine are working on Erskine Childers' 1911 'The Framework of Home Rule'. I am wondering how new/controversial/unusual his statement "Ireland was the first and nearest of the British Colonies" was then.

Soon that word will mean little, or more importantly lose its weight inside the Dail, where it has banged on since the Freestate.
