The Animal #aDNA Research Community is looking for new members to its steering committee!

If you are an ECR and interested in the field, we would love to have you on board. We particularly would value committee representation from outside of Europe.

@fravasini.bsky.social @beniamino77.bsky.social @eugeniadat.bsky.social et al. leverage the genome of a new Roman Republic human individual, proposing a novel perspective for Eastern Mediterranean ancestry in the Imperial gene pool.

Genetic clustering and ancestry components from newly reported and comparative ancient genomes reveal that the Eastern Mediterranean component was already present in Central Italy ~200 years before the onset of the Roman Empire, thus anticipating the genetic shift observed during the Imperial period.

🚨 Excited to share my new paper! We imputed 32,769 ultra-low coverage genomes from #NIPS 🫃and show how our custom filtering (GDI) impacts ancestry and PGS analyses. Big thanks to the team behind this long and rewarding work! 🧬

A new perspective on the arrival of the Eastern Mediterranean genetic influx in Central Italy before the onset of the Roman Empire
Abstract. Italian genetic history was profoundly shaped by the Romans. While the Iron Age Central Italian gene pool was comparable to that of other coeval

eugeniadat.bsky.social
🧬 Takeaway:
The transformation of the Central Italian gene pool didn’t start with Empire.
It began with earlier, gradual processes during the Republican phase—some driven from within Italy itself.

8/
eugeniadat.bsky.social
📊qpAdm models suggest Imperial Roman groups derive ~70–80% of ancestry from individuals like Villa Falgari or other oEMs.
This implies a continuity of Eastern influence from Republic to Empire.

7/
eugeniadat.bsky.social
⬅️Other Republican samples with similar ancestry (“IA/Republic oEM”) support this pattern.
These are not outliers—they likely represent an early wave of gene flow that shaped the Imperial gene pool.

6/
eugeniadat.bsky.social
🗝️Key evidence:
▶ PCA and f3-MDS place the individual close to Phoenician and Anatolian BA/IA groups
▶ High Iran_Neolithic / CHG component
▶ Y-DNA haplogroup R1b-Z2105 clusters with Eastern individuals

5/
eugeniadat.bsky.social
🧿Instead, we show that the genetic shift began ~200 years earlier, during the Late Roman Republic, likely linked to:
– Early Roman influence in the eastern Med
– Internal mobility from Southern Italy (Greek colonies)

4/
eugeniadat.bsky.social
🔴This challenges the common view that such ancestry entered the region only after the rise of the Roman Empire via large-scale migration to Rome from eastern provinces.

3/
eugeniadat.bsky.social
🇮🇹Our study centers on a Late Republican individual (341–53 BCE) from Villa Falgari (Tarquinia). aDNA analysis reveals a strong Eastern Mediterranean ancestry—unexpected for this period.

Turns out imputation of introgressed archaic regions in aDNA works really well — sometimes even better than for the rest of the genome. More on this (and other cool results) in our new preprint 👇 #aDNA #ArchaicIntrogression #imputation
