Higher Ed in 2025 is opening your mailbox to see that your institution has sent you:

1. A Center for Teaching and Learning call to integrate AI into your classroom; and

2. An Office of Academic Integrity email encouraging you to crack down on students who use AI to cheat.

As a first-gen student this step feels particularly unreal and more than ever I feel blessed for having had the chance to go to university. I cannot thank my mentors, companions and students in and outside academia enough for your continued support.

I'm hiring another postdoc (research-focused, for almost 5 years) for my @erc.europa.eu project on the educational cleavage!
I'm looking for someone with strong quantitative text-analysis skills (e.g. #NLP, #LLM, etc.) to study the role of political actors in cleavage formation.

Publication alert - tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... A while ago I realised that my Dutch colleagues found it quite unusual that German high-school graduates (Abiturient*innen) enter vocational training (VET) although they could enrol for higher education. So, we decided to write a paper about this.

On 21 February 2024, we will be hosting a workshop on "Exploring the Politics of Long-Termism", as part of my NWO-funded EXPLOT project.

There is some (at least partial) funding available to attend the event.

I'd be most grateful if you could share! polisky
Call for Papers:

Workshop: Exploring the Politics of Long-Termism
University of Groningen, Wednesday 21 February 2024

The “Exploring the Politics of Long-Termism” (EXPLOT) research team invites scholars from various disciplines in the social sciences to submit proposals for participation in an interdisciplinary workshop focused on exploring the dynamics, challenges, and opportunities associated with long-term thinking in politics. This workshop aims to foster meaningful discussions, exchange of ideas, and collaboration among researchers interested in the intersection of political science, public policy, history, sociology, (behavioural) economics, environmental studies, philosophy, and related fields.
Within the framework of this project, we seek to understand how political systems, institutions, and actors engage with long-term considerations in their decision-making processes. Selected contributions will be invited to contribute to the edited volume “A Research Agenda for the Politics of Long-Termism”, contracted with Edward Elgar (to be submitted in the course of 2025), as well as a special issue proposal on the subject matter. Most importantly, this workshop aims at building an international and interdisciplinary community of scholars working on different aspects of political long-termism.

Partial financial support will be provided for selected participants who require it in order to come to Groningen, with priority being given to early-career researchers. This workshop will also be given in a hybrid setting, should interested colleagues be unable to join in person. Contributions from scholars based in the Global South are very much encouraged.

If you are interested in contributing, please send a short abstract (approx. 300 words) and a short biography (one paragraph) to b.j.j.leruth@rug.nl and r.kremer@rug.nl.

NEW ARTICLE by @andreashaupt.bsky.social and Dafna Gelbgiser: More cognitive labor goes along with higher work–family conflict for women, but not for men.

OPEN ACCESS: doi.org/10.1080/1461...
The unequal division of cognitive labor within households, and its potential association with mental load and stress, has gained substantial interest in recent public and scholarly discussions. We aim to deepen this debate theoretically and empirically. First, going beyond the question of whether the division of cognitive labor is gendered, we connect cognitive household labor with existing stress theories and ask whether men and women typically perform cognitive labor tasks that involve different levels of stress. We then discuss whether women perform these stressful tasks more often, making them more prone to higher levels of family–work conflict. Second, we test the association between the division of cognitive labor and family–work conflict empirically using large-scale survey data from 10 European countries within the Generations & Gender Programme (GGP). Results based on logistic regressions confirm that a high share of cognitive labor increases women’s family–work conflict, but
