I find, especially with high-pressure designs, that's actually the moment I need to go the loosest at the outset. Sometimes you have to draw badly on purpose

I attacked this one with sloppy sharpie just to show it I'm not afraid of it, and slowly grew the fundamentals of the design from there!

One of the most important designs of Project Dragon was the Great Spirit of the Inner Lands! An embodiment of sunshine and growth, central quest giver of our starter region, decorated with symbols representing each of 5 heroes you'd meet!
A little bit like if the sun was a person, but also a little bit like if a hill woke up. A six armed, glowing, tree-headed spirit of warmth and welcome. His garment is decorated with 5 symbols- each representing one of 5 heroes that unlock both story and gameplay features for the player! Above his head floats the voxel seed- the first block from which all things grow

Meet Leadona! 3rd of our 5 Inner Lands heroes, and the leader of a Purran theater troupe. Alongside her companion Gran- a grumpy haunted mask animated by the spirit of her grandmother. She's a distillation of the work we did on the Purran culture in general-
Leadana, a ginger colored cat person, dressed in the bright colors and sunburst motifs of a theatrical troupe leader in the Purran tradition! Accompanied by the floating ghost-haunted mask of Gran, a matriarch of her line intended to provide a grumpy foil to Leadona's sunny disposition

I imagined Pacer as the "Porsche of Plain Wyverns"- a species of mounts (and pets, lookat the babyyyy) for the player to collect and ride. Effie acted as ambassador to the world of mounts and traveling the world at speed- and there are lots more of THOSE too o_o
A blue wyvern- in baby form as a collectible pet, in adult form as a full-grown mount for the player, and the same with more layers of padded leather armor. They are all extremely cute, and they don't look like blue chocobos YOU look like a blue chocobo shut up (they do look like blue chocobos) Effie, from the previous post- but with various hats and hairstyles to match. Each trying to balance fantasy, postal uniforms, and the feel of a gearhead who works on hotrods (the hotrod in this case is her red wyvern pacer, the porsche of wyverns)

Another key hero NPC from Project Dragon was Effie and her mount and best friend, Pacer. Effie is a courier and founder of the Red Wyverns, dedicated to connecting folks across the changeable landscape of the Inner Lands by mail. Tuning her chair/saddle in was a great puzzle

Her saddle is complex, and diagrams show how it folds out, rolls backwards off the tail, and becomes a mobility chair. Saddlebags full of packages, maps, and logos make it clear that they are post officers for the Red Wyvern Couriers!

An especially rewarding part of the process is layering the worldbuilding with deeper design work
Oca was our ambassador for musical crafting, as well as one of the last survivors of an ancient civilization. Musical props, carvings and notation, and a collectible pet named Rocca!
An array of terracotta props, with pops of flaking paint and turquoise crystal- they were intended to be part of the musical sandbox related to Oca & his culture- building blocks to create sound, ancient music boxes, a lute made of stone stringed strands of glowing magic Here are explorations of musical notation, reimagined as abstracted glyphs from Oca's ancient culture. There are also carvings of ocarina golems, musical toys, and wind spirits all intended to give the development team a palette of shapes to pull from for the creation of props and cinematics Rocca is a walking ball with maraccas for ears, made of terracotta, sliced into 3 rotating segments covered in glyphs that spin like a slot machine to create expressions! She's like an ancient stone jigglypuff!

One of the most important designs of the whole project for me was Oca! Our ocarina golem. I kept telling my teammates “we need weirdos! Weird little guys!” But everyone really understood once I came in Monday with Oca to pitch. He’s a living clay ocarina with accordion arms 🎵
Think of an egg, okay now that egg is a robot, but that robot is made of terracotta clay. And full of holes like a flute. And he's got accordions for arms and chimes on its back. Got all that? that's Oca!
