Souls can also materialize in different ways: as a visible shadow, a breath of air, a reflection in water, or even a bird. After death, some souls go to the realm of the dead, while others remain on earth for a certain period of time, where they can harm the bereaved.

I have made a mockup of the mansi translation of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights in a booklet format. Ofc wrote on it that it hasn't been reviewed by the UN on an official case.

Mervi de Heer @mervideheer.bsky.social & Luke Maurits analyse stability of meanings in basic vocabulary lists of Uralic languages by calculating a borrowing probability for each meaning and clustering them into groups of more borrowable and less borrowable meanings.

Yesterday I attended the Udmurt Language day celebration at Szeged University!
We made some traditional hay decorations, drank some tea and ate traditional potato flatbread, while listening to some Udmurt music. And at the end we watched a film named Анай (Mother)

Yesterday the Finno-Ugric department at the University of Szeged celebrated the Udmurt language day by familiarizing ourselves with Southern Udmurt dialects by watching a film. We also made traditional hay decorations. See the film here:

I only now come back to this.
It's because they are cognates :>
Some aren't though, and that's just coincidence then

It was sorta out of respect for the bear, not to call it's name, but yeah haha
September 29, 2025 at 7:23 AM
There is also other names,
ню̄рмуй
пупакве
ӯнтуй
то̄рев (nowadays only polar bears)
пурнуй
ect.

There are recorded words in other Mansi varieties, like Eastern (Konda) Mansi:

выйяньсих [wɘjænʲsʲix]

Or Souther (Tavda) Mansi:

tå̄rėŋ or äńšuχ ~ äńčuχ

The original word for bear was avoided so much by the Hungarians, we got the taboo name for it from a slavic language.

Northern Mansi had the same, so they don't have the original word for bear neither. They call it во̄рто̄лно̄йка or во̄рто̄лнут "in forest living old man" or "in forest living thing".

Even Mansi say ся̄й
(the macron is wrong on blueksy, that's a shame)
