Bit of an intro/background... I'm a first generation sheep farmer in Quebec with commercial shedding (hair) sheep. I'm not a 1st generation farmer though, every side of my family tree has been farming for as long as there's been records. I'm just the 1st one to do sheep. 🧵(1/6)
If you want to have a business, it is going to come with paperwork. Either do it yourself in a timely manner or pay someone else to do it. You can't escape paperwork. I don't know why tax season catches everyone unaware each year. It's an annual thing. Get over it and do your books!

The entire discussion about the traceability requirements currently happening are missing so many important elements. Quebec already has most of those rules. So does dairy and pork. Excluding those voices makes your arguments harder.

Quebec’s election year is heating up—but the sovereignty question remains ice cold. Voters are volatile, history shows late swings, yet today’s numbers suggest steep headwinds for a first-mandate referendum. https://thewalrus.ca/few-quebecers-support-sovereignty-and-even-fewer-want-a-referendum/

I read a lot of fiction, mostly romance, where there's often elements that require me to ignore logic/disbelief in order to stay in the story. Apparently I now have to add the same filter to the news, all because a madman has bigger tantrums over the word "no" than my toddler.

New year... same me. And the news is still depressing.

The social experiment with the churches shouldn't have surprised anyone. The least trustworthy and helpful people I know sit in a pew every Sunday. The collective actions or inactions of a congregation tells me more than whatever they preach.

Dear Parliament in Ottawa,

Could you all be the functional adults you're supposed to be and find some compromises? We don't need yet another election, I doubt it would result in a majority anyway. My toddler throws less tantrums than the lot of you.

Sincerely,
A tired Canadian voter

Ruffling some fleeces... shedding sheep absolutely have a place in the Canadian sheep industry ans instead of moaning about the costs of wool, something can be done about it.

Those poor children. They're terrified. The children in Gaza deserve peace, they've already lost so much.
Israeli soldiers were filmed detaining two Palestinian children in Hebron, in the occupied West Bank, while demanding to know their father’s whereabouts.

When a passerby intervened and urged their release because of their young age, a soldier replied, “I don’t care”.

The fight for justice for Palestinian children like Muhammad al-Durrah continues.

A UN inquiry has found that Israel’s war on Gaza is a genocide. More than 66,000 Palestinians - at least 19,424 of them children - have been killed according to Gaza’s health ministry.

Delayed letter mail... you know the person who decided that doesn't operate an actual business. Some industries just don't do online payments like the sales barn. So now instead of 7-10 days of waiting for cheques, I'll be waiting, what, 14 days? Great 🙄

About this Florida vaccine story:

When they were little - 1 yr and 3 1/2 - my two older boys, who’d had all their shots, got whooping cough.

We asked their pediatrician what would’ve happened if they hadn’t been vaccinated.

“Oh, they’d have died.”

We haven't had measurable rain since July 24th. That means we probably won't get a third cut. This is the basic calculation I used before I had spreadsheets of data to ensure we have enough feed.

Some weeks I like my job, this is not one of those weeks. I know bookkeeping is boring but the consequences for not doing it can involve losing your whole business. And I'm done making that my emergency.

Ended up with a new phone because my old one overheated. I decided not to install Facebook this time. I did get Bluesky obviously.

Agreed. Why is it focusing on the creative outlets instead of the functional? Maybe because it's a bunch of men in AI tech making decisions who probably don't do the laundry or dishes anyway.

Ignoring succession planning is impacting the whole industry at this point. Not talking about it is just kicking the can down the road in a bad situation. And the problem isn't the next generation. Selling isn't the failure, having to sell because someone refused to plan is.

Running Out of Time
Transition planning takes a long time and for the next generation, most farms are waiting too long, if not ignoring the topic altogether.

I have come to the conclusion that when it comes to transition planning, if farmers wanted to, they would. Outside of agriculture, over 40% of family-owned businesses do have detailed transition and succession plans in place. That's compared to 12% in agriculture. If they wanted to, they would.

It's been a long tax season and I have thoughts. Biggest one, do your bookkeeping in a timely manner and know your obligations, it's your responsibility as a business owner (and a farm operator) to know what's due when and have a basic understanding of a financial statement.

June 30th is a worse tax deadline than April 30th. I am alternating between rage and being physically sick from the stress. If you have a business, either do your damn books on time or pay (a competent) someone else to do them.
