"Luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing" is a meme started with a fan video in 2009, which got so popular Nintendo themselves referenced it repeatedly. However, the earliest instance of Luigi winning by doing nothing actually comes from a game and predates the meme by 5 years.
"Luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing" is a popular Internet meme about Luigi that started with a video uploaded by YouTube user KlydeStorm in 2009, in which Luigi wins against CPU opponents in Mario Party 2 without performing any inputs. It became so popular that Nintendo's own social media accounts and official videos referenced it. [A post from SuperMario_UK on Twitter] He does nothing. How does he always win? [A subtitle on Nintendo Monthly Rewind-April 2021 on YouTube] But will Luigi win by doing nothing? However, the first instance of Luigi winning while doing absolutely nothing actually comes from Nintendo themselves. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Luigi wins a drama contest while playing grass, a role requiring him to lie down and be silent for the whole play. While it might at first appear that the other actors's performances were responsible for the victory, it turns out that everyone specifically liked Luigi doing absolutely nothing. In Super Mario World, green berries increase the timer. By strategically eating them to make the timer pass 100 multiple times, the music can be sped up repeatedly. It turns out that the music engine cannot handle more than 20 speed-ups, and slows down to a crawl instead.

Super Mario RPG features Jinx, a miniboss noted for his small size. The prototype version of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga shows that he was planned to reappear in that game. Possibly to increase the comedic factor, he was made even smaller.

In 2D Mario platformers, Mario can either crouch or slide, but is denied the ability to sit in place. However, with a specific setup in Super Mario Bros. 3, Mario will come to rest in a sliding animation, finally allowing him to simply sit.

An official Japanese 1988 guide for Super Mario Bros. 3 contains a small drawing of a Thwomp on the cover that, instead of the usual grimace, has a mischievous, cat-like expression. I have created a high-quality recreation of this Thwomp.

In Super Paper Mario, Mr. L is actually much smaller than Mario and Luigi, and gets scaled up at runtime. The game was originally developed for the GameCube before moving to Wii; Mario and Luigi received new Wii graphics while Mr. L was stuck with small GameCube textures.

Super Mario Bros. 3 contains a bizarre "vengeful Thwomp" glitch. Normally, if a Thwomp is hit by a hammer, it just dies. However, if a diagonal Thwomp is hit in the topmost position, it will perform a jump after dying just to get one last revenge attack in.

In Super Mario World, Mario can use lava to create life from nothing. Throwing an empty Koopa shell upward on the frame it would sink into lava will make it turn into a living Koopa. It can then be extracted from the shell and the process repeated indefinitely for infinite life.

In 2023, I posted about a bizarre Dolce & Gabbana shirt featuring Mario standing in a beam of light alongside text praising him. I have tracked down the source of the image, which was a splash page in the E3 2000 brochure. Now the venerated Mario can be seen in high quality.
