It's not really the case that patronymics are used in Greece and Cyprus. It's not like in Russia where it's usual to refer to someone by their name along with their father's name. It's only used occasionally in certain official documents.

"Independence" means very different things here in each case; whether the separation of former Yugoslavia into separate nations, the first phase of Greek independence from the then Ottoman Empire, or Turkey becoming a republic; these are completely different and it's misleading to compare them.

At the low end there's likely to be significant under-reporting. At the high end there's a reverse bias: people with major mental health problems may not be able to mantain a demanding high income job. This graph means less than it appears to.

It's because he was within Mordor. It's "explained" shortly after Shelob's lair, when Sam had been wearing the ring to hide from orcs but takes it off just before coming out of the tunnel and entering Mordor, because instinctively he realises that he'll become visible to Sauron in his domain.

Me sorprende que te hayan dicho que trabajar con pantallas provoca la presbicia. Yo he sido un ratón de biblioteca desde siempre, así que tengo miopía, que ya reduce el efecto de la presbicia que tengo debido a mi edad.

We should all have freedom of movement, to seek a better life for ourselves and our loved ones, and especially to get out of an unbearable situation. Some people vote like they're billionaires-in-waiting, but we're actually all asylum-seekers-in-waiting.

Tech has successfully gamified everyone's brains to the point that they think they're living in a simulation/video game even if they don't actually think that. Literally 'reading' books like a player in a game to gain imaginary xp.
People are reading AI-generated synopses of books and then claiming they read 100 books in a week. This is how the abolition of books began in Fahrenheit 451: classics were condensed into five-minute summaries for those too busy to do the reading. Later came the burnings.

Some of this is just imploring people once again not to farm out their storytelling to AI. Craft and process can sometimes be the only things you'll ever get out of a story that you've written, so why would you ever give those joys away to a machine?

"We also reported that the chatbot was bullshitting, in the technical sense."
We're living in the age of bullshit. Trump is the iconoclastic paragon of our times. No wonder people are desperate to embrace the automation of bullshit.

Someone on here compared AI produced material as "digital asbestos " which in a few decades' time we will have to work out how to eradicate from the fabric of research.
From my own academic research, even pre LLMs there was a huge danger of zombie factoids that begin in a respectable publication by mistake and then get reprinted for decades because no one is backtracing to the original source. Once bad info gets into the system it can take years to clear it out.
I've seen numerous examples of this in recent days - we're at a point where some reporters are using LLMs as a source and not even remotely properly factchecking, but also where LLM generated material is making its way into other material and being unknowingly reproduced by others.

Is it right to assume that bluesky are prejidiced? An alternative explanation that occurs to me for the simple reason that I've seen this kind of thing before is an organised bombardment of complaints, alleging antisemitism or whatever, from a large number of individual accounts.

Maybe put out a call for unpaid volunteer slush pile readers on a trial basis? You'll be able to figure out which one is in tune with the themes and style of the magazine. I think there are many people (like myself) who would like to gain experience of the process and would volunteer.
