From The Princess Bride to Willow & Erik the Viking, Film Utopia tackles the twilight of 80s fantasy. Expect arguments over what counts, Steven’s undying love for Buttercup & a nod to fantasy-adjacent oddities like Big & Mannequin. 🐉🎶

Well, you've watched the two best ones already, then 🤣

Tough to say. My list of garbage is quite epic atm. This poster is really selling it to me, though 🤔

@papalazarou.bsky.social I've quickly added this to the list. I reckon you might be interested, too.

It was! I believe the correct term is "cut to shit." Check out the documentary 'Never Sleep Again', they go over it in that.

Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994)

Craven's meta-horror dress rehearsal sees Freddy clawing his way out of the movies and into real life, stalking Heather Langenkamp as herself, before properly cracking the code two years later with Scream.

Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991)

The once-effective dream stalker concept goes full Looney Tunes with Freddy now offing teens with power gloves and dream parachutes before getting blown up in 3D like a cartoon villain who really should’ve quit five movies ago.

Yeah, the striking production design and artsy camera work really propelled this one in terms of visual appeal. The performances were decent, too. Shame about the overzealous censorship - especially on the motorbike scene. I'd love to see that sequence as intended, all gore intact.

Ikr?! I've been CRAP on here lately 🤣🤣 I'll try to be around a bit more!

Nevermind that. When are you getting the Peter Bark tatt???

A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989)

Freddy hitches a ride in a fetus to rekindle the family business, but what should be terrifying ends up a surreal mash of gothic set design, soap opera melodrama, and your man cracking jokes like the drunk uncle at a christening.

Yeah, but Tosha has begun her journey into the oddly specific genre of "Giallo-adjacent, squeaky-voiced, whodunnit slasher films'!!!

They may have still held hope that he would return to early Ken Russell. He had other plans!

Distributor:
"So, Ken. Just how mental is your next film going to be?"

Ken Russell:
"Yes."

Australia's Umbrella Entertainment has a pretty nice release, same region as us. Worth it if you can find it for a decent price over here. I think I paid something like 12 or 13 for this on Ebay.

His last 3 films, King of the Ants, Edmond, and Stuck, really are bonkers. All thematically similar in that they all feature protagonists who create horrendous situations for themselves, then have to deal with the consequences. But if the 3, Stuck is particularly good.

I was over the moon when 101 Films announced that Castke Freak Blu-ray recently, as I missed out on the previous release & it had since become super expensive secondhand. A lot of people find Space Truckers falls flat, which is fair. But it has such an entertaining cast, I can enjoy it for that.

His final film before sadly passing away, Stuck, is an incredibly well written & paced romp with one of the most satisfying conclusions imaginable! What a character arcs for Mena Suvari's character! 🤣

Anyway. That's my gushing rant done 😂

When I rewatch Re-Animator, I can't stop there & always double-bill it with From Beyond. Same with Dolls & Castle Freak. Fortress is one of the most entertaining films ever made - I will die on that hill - and Dagon deserves a closer look than many are prepared to give it.

I bloody love Stuart Gordon. I genuinely think his films have a lot more wit & finesse than people tend to give them credit for, in spite of all the obvious silliness. The only one I have little time for is Robot Jox. Dolls is beautiful.

Looks pretty solid to me! Egg tip: After the underneath has set, after a minute or so, tilt the pan and, using a teaspoon, sort of baste the top of the egg with the oil until the top of the yolk is cooked.
