I've had a few people mention The So Strangely podcast to me this conference season. Maybe its time to bring it back!

Again enjoying following research on music as part of culture and society in a contrast to my usual focus on music as physical phenomenon investigated through music cognition, music technology, and performance-oriented musicology. Our work shouldn't be so separated

Any countries whose scientific research funding bodies are NOT currently under siege by their own national leadership would do very well announcing investments in bringing in foreign research talent right now

I never got to meet Jimmy Carter, but I worked on several projects that involved him and music in both popular and classical and just nothing but respect.

My daughter was one of almost 400 tuba players gathered at the Kauffman Center for A Tuba Christmas.

It was beautiful.

In our #musicscience module, 2nd & 3rd year undergrads are tasked with conducting replication studies of existing research. Their experiments often come with fascinating results!

Instead of waiting for musicscience.net/durms/, here are some highlights from their recent project presentations

Of course synthesizing the scatter is doable, and done. The realness of the musicians is more palpable through the arrangement. Like how you can tell when composers understand the physicality of the parts they write for voice, or winds, or strings. Mechanical smoothness is a limiting aesthetic.

I loved the RPWP album because the instrumentals feel more live, more haphazard, messily interactive. Even the claps are a bunch of people in a room instead of staggered layers of tracks. Kind of amazing how the difference is perceivable and enjoyable.

on my way home from RM's Wrong People Right Place, think about this KPop star learning about music built by/with live musicians after years of recording alone in a booth to a producer constructed track.

The interactive part was also good for building shared understanding with visitors who hadn't considered these aspects of how audiences act "together".

i need to rework that exposure dimension. Its trying to capture both the amount of people affected by one audience members actions and the medium of transmission.

The result of crowd sourcing the exposure and simultaneity of various audience behaviours via analogue interactive plots at the RITMO Largo poster session yesterday.
hand drawn plot of various audience behaviour labels pinned in the space of Exposure (private to broadcast) vs Simultaneity (time log scale) Musical events on Exposure to Simultaneity plot, with string connecting pins marking of characteristic audience behaviours.
