The @nytimes.com and @natecohn.bsky.social shared their readers' ideas for how to stop gerrymandering. The most popular proposal? Proportional representation.

"Proportional representation would make gerrymandering irrelevant. But it would do a lot more than that." t.co/1nLM8D02E8

Great idea. Proportional representation advocacy in America needs funding!! We have thoughts!!

if we are going to have online magazines for Abundance, i think a wealthy patron should fund an online magazine for electoral reform — specifically for furthering the twin causes of proportional representation and democratic revival. seems like a comparatively neglected space

We have a uniquely old Congress because we have a uniquely rigid electoral system. No wonder young people feel like democracy is rigged -- in many ways, our system is rigged against them.

"What made Omaha a weird city in 2024 was that its diversity was visible. To fix our failing politics, America needs an electoral system that makes our diversity visible everywhere."

I spent last summer in the weirdest city in politics. Omaha voted Democrat for President, Independent for Senate, Republican for House. @leedrutman.bsky.social and I explain why places like that are going away, and what we can do about it, in the latest Ripon Forum. riponsociety.org/article/is-t...

Bacon’s success is thanks to strong relationships in his district and his brand as a centrist, opposing his party line just often enough to win over voters ...

American leadership is older today than at any other time in history.

Our new report with @newamerica.org and @protectdemocracy.org shows why that's not an accident: the rules of our electoral system favor old over young Americans.

Here's a thread on how that works 🧵

“I think a more proportional House is the way to go. @raskin.house.gov & @beyer.house.gov's Fair Representation Act really is the kind of thing that solves gerrymandering.”

Some graphs from our report on the age divide that really struck me: Almost 40% of US representatives are above retirement age and that is a uniquely American problem.

It also doesn't seem like term limits would help much: new members of Congress are...not that young!

Special thanks to @jakemgrumbach.bsky.social, Charlotte Hill, and @leedrutman.bsky.social for their guidance and feedback on this project!

America's winner-take-all electoral system has countless barriers for young people who want to participate in politics.

Proportional representation systems are — you guessed it — more representative.
fixourhouse.bsky.social
The old age of our leaders is unique compared to the rest of the world.

We have the one of the largest age gaps between legislators and those they represent, and (by far) the largest share of representatives over 60.

Why is that?

fighting gerrymanders can seem hopeless, but there is a solution. big moment right now for people to see districting and the two-party system as inherently linked, and a relic of our archaic electoral rules. congress has the power to ban partisan gerrymandering and establish multi-member districts.
fixourhouse.bsky.social
QUICK REMINDER that the Constitution gives Congress the power to set the rules for its own elections.

That means Congress could effectively end gerrymandering immediately by switching to multi-member districts and proportional representation.

Authoritarians like Viktor Orban understand that in order to entrench power and make elections matter less, they just need to use America's electoral system of single-member districts.

Orban would look at Texas and say, what took y'all so long?
