Raised where the border is a bridge. I still believe in bridges, between nations, between people. I believe in the quiet power of intelligence, in science, equal rights, equity, and dignity even under fire. Ignorance burns hot, but intelligence burns long.

This pinned post won’t get any more love from the algorithm than my first 1,000, but it sums me up: I can’t stand tRump or MAGA (esp. MAGA logic). I call out the nonsense, I drift off-topic sometimes, and I’m trying to tilt things toward the positive. If that works for you, welcome.

Should have people come up with lyrics:

They’re anti-vax in the streets,
But boosted in the sheets,
Talk tough on Fox at night,
Then line up for that sweet-sweet spike.

“Freedom!” they yell on air,
But that Band-Aid mark says care.
GOP hypocrisy beat
Moderna got ’em movin’ their feet.

The GOP is anti-vax in the streets, but pro-vax in the sheets.

History warned us about tyrants. Nobody warned us they’d be this dumb.

The world’s atrocities slowed down enough that every one could be broadcast instantly, making it feel like things got worse. When that stopped keeping us angry, they started manufacturing outrage.

Chin up. Modernity has given us the safest, healthiest, most prosperous era in human history.

Every few generations, we bafflingly let the grifters, the zealots, and the loudest dullards steer the ship…straight into a reef.

We’ve recovered from worse. We invented vaccines, civil rights, seat belts, and the internet. We’ll recover again, just as soon as the rest of us grab the wheel.

Any sci-fi in that pile? I highly recommend reading Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir.

Trump doesn’t like data. He wants investors, consumers, and everyone else to be in the dark, so he can lie without fear of factual contradiction. He can create even more of a fantasy world. He can pretend that he’s been wildly successful even when he’s been a terrible failure.

We live in such a strange time. Can you imagine the backlash if Barack Obama had opened up US skies to Qatar Air Force fighter jets?

Then there’s the whole Putin saying tRump was robbed of the Nobel prize and tRump thanking the war mongering invader of a neighboring democracy.

I don't understand why I see things so differently. I see a health insurance industry that thinks it's entitled to charge people 1/3rd of their income for healthcare. That industry shouldn't be "fixed." It should be burned to the ground and its ashes pissed on.

I see where you’re coming from. It wasn’t my experience reading it but any preconceived notion I had about SW is that there’s nothing wrong with it. However, if I had picked that book up thinking it’s immoral or worse then yes I could have used it as confirmation bias to further cement my judgement.

…she was in any way suggesting all sex workers are mentally ill or engaging in self destructive behavior or that they are selfish. I agree. It was a good read.

I got the notion her bipolar disorder was actually a big part of it. Could be the combination of factors as you mentioned too. I don’t know much about mental illness but I felt for her. And also I don’t know much about the sex industry, but her story wasn’t giving me the impression that …

The phrase “I only believe what I see” isn’t true either. Most people believe what they want. No matter what they see.

I’m glad I came across your account, Lea. You sharing your introspection is inspiring.
This line hit:
“I used to be such a hopeless romantic. Like I couldn’t wait to fall in love and be with my soulmate for the rest of my life. And then you grow up and you find out that it’s not that easy”
