The world’s atrocities slowed down enough that every one could be broadcast instantly, making it feel like things got worse. When that stopped keeping us angry, they started manufacturing outrage.

Chin up. Modernity has given us the safest, healthiest, most prosperous era in human history.

Every few generations, we bafflingly let the grifters, the zealots, and the loudest dullards steer the ship…straight into a reef.

We’ve recovered from worse. We invented vaccines, civil rights, seat belts, and the internet. We’ll recover again, just as soon as the rest of us grab the wheel.

Trump doesn’t like data. He wants investors, consumers, and everyone else to be in the dark, so he can lie without fear of factual contradiction. He can create even more of a fantasy world. He can pretend that he’s been wildly successful even when he’s been a terrible failure.

Then there’s the whole Putin saying tRump was robbed of the Nobel prize and tRump thanking the war mongering invader of a neighboring democracy.

I don't understand why I see things so differently. I see a health insurance industry that thinks it's entitled to charge people 1/3rd of their income for healthcare. That industry shouldn't be "fixed." It should be burned to the ground and its ashes pissed on.

I see where you’re coming from. It wasn’t my experience reading it but any preconceived notion I had about SW is that there’s nothing wrong with it. However, if I had picked that book up thinking it’s immoral or worse then yes I could have used it as confirmation bias to further cement my judgement.

I got the notion her bipolar disorder was actually a big part of it. Could be the combination of factors as you mentioned too. I don’t know much about mental illness but I felt for her. And also I don’t know much about the sex industry, but her story wasn’t giving me the impression that …
