I’ve just published Chapter 2 of Crafting Platforms. To celebrate, I’m giving away the first two chapters for free.

If you’re interested in platform engineering, reliability, and building platforms with intention, this is a good moment to jump in.

When we talk about self-service platforms, it’s easy to confuse freedom with unrestricted access. In practice, giving developers every possible option usually leads to more complexity, not more autonomy.

When I started writing Crafting Platforms, the second chapter was supposed to focus on “Platform as a Product.” But as I developed the content, it became clear that I couldn’t discuss product thinking without first defining the broader context: the Internal Developer Platform itself.

I tried the @grafana.bsky.social MCP server today with @github.com Copilot and @gitlab.com Duo, both with Claude Sonnet and I’m speechless. It’s definitely my preferred new toy, and it will become essential in my toolset moving forward.

Friendly reminder that subscribers will get the first two chapters of the book for free. First chapter already published. Second chapter will be out soon. Don’t miss this opportunity!

Understanding Engineering Momentum
The physics behind why platform adoption is harder than it looks

In physics, momentum (“quantity of motion”) is the product of mass and velocity: p = mv

A fully loaded cargo ship traveling at cruising speed has enormous momentum. You can’t simply turn the wheel and expect the vessel to pivot sharply. It will fight you. It wants to keep going straight.

I’m writing an article this week about the “Engineering Momentum Problem” when you want to implement a new practice such as platform engineering in an existing team. I thought a lot about this lately. You never get an empty whiteboard where you can draw an ideal platform…

Are we still doing starter packs?

Put this one together because I love seeing things that lovely folks write on the internet, and I'm sure there are more people to meet and add to this list.

Besides the effects on the tech industry, right now there are H-1B holders—people—who built a life in the US.

If they are traveling, they have 17 hours to get back to the US, or the life they built will be shattered and taken from them.

Can you imagine constantly living with this uncertainty?
