We collected seasonal temperature & precipitation outlooks from 4 major weather forecast providers for fall 2025. Now that fall has ended, we thought it would be insightful to compare the forecast outlooks to the climate summaries to see which providers were more or less accurate across the U.S.

Weather word of the week: Nor’easter.

A Nor’easter is a storm along the East Coast of North America, so called because the winds over the coastal area are typically from the northeast. These storms may occur at any time of year but are most frequent and most violent between September and April.

As I say here, this is not about saving the planet. The planet will be orbiting the sun long after we’re gone.

The question is, will there be a healthy, thriving human society on that planet? The answer to that question is very much up for grabs at this point.

A start-up called Mazama Energy plans to power homes by tapping energy from “superhot rock”, producing cheap, clean, constant energy almost anywhere. Engineers are in the process of building a geothermal power plant on the slopes of one of the largest and most hazardous active volcanoes in the U.S.

Weather word of the week: black ice.

Black ice is a deadly driving hazard defined as patchy ice on roadways or other transportation surfaces that cannot easily be seen. It is often clear (not white) with the black road surface visible underneath.

We analyzed 593 locations across Europe to identify the locations with the highest overall average accuracy of forecast & persistence high & low temperatures & precipitation.

The most accurate combination of forecasts & persistence was found in Spain, the UK, Portugal, & Greece.

Weather word of the week: sudden stratospheric warming event (SSWE).

You may have heard in the news that a SSWE may soon occur. SSWE is a significant disruption of the stratospheric polar vortex that begins with large-scale atmospheric waves getting pushed higher into the atmosphere. (1/3)
