Will we have a white Christmas?

It’s one of the big questions weather forecasters receive every holiday season. NOAA’s NCDC created this graphic of average chances of a white Christmas in the lower 48, with a white Christmas being defined as at least 1” of snow on the ground.

Weather word of the week: Nor’easter.

A Nor’easter is a storm along the East Coast of North America, so called because the winds over the coastal area are typically from the northeast. These storms may occur at any time of year but are most frequent and most violent between September and April.

Weather word of the week: black ice.

Black ice is a deadly driving hazard defined as patchy ice on roadways or other transportation surfaces that cannot easily be seen. It is often clear (not white) with the black road surface visible underneath.

We analyzed 593 locations across Europe to identify the locations with the highest overall average accuracy of forecast & persistence high & low temperatures & precipitation.

The most accurate combination of forecasts & persistence was found in Spain, the UK, Portugal, & Greece.

Weather word of the week: sudden stratospheric warming event (SSWE).

You may have heard in the news that a SSWE may soon occur. SSWE is a significant disruption of the stratospheric polar vortex that begins with large-scale atmospheric waves getting pushed higher into the atmosphere. (1/3)

The polar vortex is a low pressure area—a wide expanse of swirling cold air—that is parked in polar regions. During winter, the polar vortex at the North Pole expands, sending cold air southward. This often results in outbreaks of cold temp in the U.S.

A new report found that rising global heat is now killing one person per minute around the world. Fossil fuel usage has caused toxic air pollution, wildfires, & the spread of diseases. Heat-related deaths have surged by 23% since the 1990s to an average of 546,000 per year between 2012 and 2021.

We analyzed 793 locations across the United States and identified the cities with the highest and lowest forecast precipitation accuracy for the next three days.

Nine of the top ten best places to live for reliable precipitation forecasts are in California, with accuracies above 96%.
