Yesterday I posted a pic near US 287 at the CO/WY state line, and it generated a good number of likes and comments. This pic was taken from the same spot, looking away from the mountains. July 2016. I managed to dodge that rain shower.

Burning slash on my cabin property, October 2016. A friend helped me cut and burn young pines that were infested with beetles - after the burn ban was lifted, of course. Fire danger is high in that part of the world.

View from a bluff, towards a pile where wood is being burned. The trees were heavily infested with ips beetles which threatened to spread across the property. The plan worked; no more trees died. The view includes young ponderosa pines in the foreground, Aeneas Valley in the distance, and forested mountains beyond the valley. The burn pile after the fire was almost completely extinguished. A few wisps of smoke rise from the ashes. The final chore was to cover the ashes with dirt.

#MultnomahFalls in Oregon is a popular #WaterfallWednesday subject. Being close to Portland, and with easy access from Interstate 84, the falls attract a big crowd. This video is from 2011.

For #ThickTrunkTuesday, the champion western redcedar known as the Duncan Cedar. Location is near Kalaloch on Washington's Olympic Peninsula. The tree was clinging to life in 2011 when I took these pics, and apparently it's still alive. See alt text.

A zigzag trail leads to the base of the Duncan Cedar. Sign from Washington Dept. of Natural Resources reads: "The Duncan Cedar, world's largest western redcedar (Thuja plicata). Height 178 feet, diameter 19.4 feet." Young cedars approximately 25 feet tall grow nearby. A wide angle view of the Duncan Cedar, showing the entire tree. Most of the bark is gone, and the tree clings to life with a few live branches. The tree is surrounded by a thick forest of younger conifers.

Trondheim, Norway has some interesting iron covers. I took pics of several of them in April, 2022 never thinking that I'd end up using them for #ManholeCoverMonday.

I've been going through old pictures, scanning some and throwing some away. This one goes all the way back to 1972 when I was a forestry student and bought my first camera. A vine wrapped around a vine, wrapped around a tree. See alt text.

A smaller vine is wrapped around a larger vine, growing on a young tree. A professor had converted a windowless storage room into a darkroom. Any interested students could use it. This is one of my early efforts, dust spots and all. Columbia, Missouri.

Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) in central Georgia. Photo taken about 3 years after a controlled burn. Pines are adapted to fire and will thrive after a low intensity burn.

An open stand of pine on flat terrain. Underbrush has been kept in check by controlled fire. Forbs and young pines have grown since the previous burn. Bark of the pine trees is charred, but the trees are undamaged.
