All pics are my own. I'm not a pro; I just like to share what I've seen.

No DMs, unless we know each other, or it's related to one of my posts.
Yesterday I posted a pic near US 287 at the CO/WY state line, and it generated a good number of likes and comments. This pic was taken from the same spot, looking away from the mountains. July 2016. I managed to dodge that rain shower.

It's #Caturday, and Narvik is getting ready to go out on the town. Well, maybe the back yard.

Trouble is, in order for porcupines to eat the beetles, they have to chew the bark off the tree. When they strip the bark all the way around the tree trunk, the entire tree above that point dies. (I'm not sure if they eat beetles, but they do indeed strip bark from trees.)

More recently (2024) there was the Colorado Monolith. I happened to be passing through Fort Collins when it was up. Maybe you can write a book about two cyclists who camp near the monolith, get abducted by aliens, rescued by Bigfoot, and then save the planet with the technology they stole!

With place names like Tie Siding and Virginia Dale, it's book-worthy country. Special to me, because I bicycled through there with my brother in 1971, on the way to the west coast. Here's an old slide, taken near Livermore.

Burning slash on my cabin property, October 2016. A friend helped me cut and burn young pines that were infested with beetles - after the burn ban was lifted, of course. Fire danger is high in that part of the world.

Narvik likes to see what I'm doing when I'm outdoors.

A glimpse of what might have been. What should have been. Kamala Harris tonight, in Macon, Georgia.

#MultnomahFalls in Oregon is a popular #WaterfallWednesday subject. Being close to Portland, and with easy access from Interstate 84, the falls attract a big crowd. This video is from 2011.

It's the middle of winter, but a few daffodils are blooming. I managed to catch Narvik and a stray bloom in the same frame.

The inner wood (heartwood) is vulnerable to decay. I've been able to climb inside some of the biggest cedars. On the other hand, the remaining wood is very durable and is used for shingles and other long lasting products.

It might be hard to know the age. Since most of the bark is gone, the tree is not adding growth rings, except in places where bark remains. Big cedars are usually hollow, meaning no growth rings inside, either. 300 to 500 years would be my best guess.

For #ThickTrunkTuesday, the champion western redcedar known as the Duncan Cedar. Location is near Kalaloch on Washington's Olympic Peninsula. The tree was clinging to life in 2011 when I took these pics, and apparently it's still alive. See alt text.

Near Lake Quinault, if I remember correctly.

If that's home, the sunlight in the pic is probably blinding you, lol. I've always tried to time my trips to the Olympic Peninsula when there's at least a chance of sunny weather.

Trondheim, Norway has some interesting iron covers. I took pics of several of them in April, 2022 never thinking that I'd end up using them for #ManholeCoverMonday.

I studied forestry at Missouri. Oregon was my home for 7 years. Since then, my summer work has rotated through Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. I go where the work is - and where I can find lodging for myself and my cat!

I've been going through old pictures, scanning some and throwing some away. This one goes all the way back to 1972 when I was a forestry student and bought my first camera. A vine wrapped around a vine, wrapped around a tree. See alt text.

Yesterday I found Narvik stretched out in a sunbeam. The trouble with sunbeams is that they keep moving.
