I love my garden! The vibrant colours of viper's bugloss, poppies, ox-eyed daisies, corncockles. Plenty of bees but where are the butterflies? There are so few after the earlier peacocks and holly blues. @sussexwildlife.bsky.social @katebradbury.bsky.social
Lovely session back in the woods. The children made beautiful nests
Good idea but I took it to coastways vet to check it hadn't been shot and they disposed of it as it was becoming as putrid. I'm sure the kids would have been fascinated! I called Sx police as a potential wildlife crime with the dead herring gulls.
Can we find out cause of death? Anyone in Brighton? Or Sussex?
Oh no, one of the buzzards has died. It looks recent. Is it a young one? It must be too early for this year. Could it have fallen out of the nest? I have forest school on Saturday so good to check the site first. Another dead bird in Ovingdean @katebradbury.bsky.social @sussexwildlife.bsky.social
Ovingdean along Greenways, the road from the roundabout on the south coast road. I think the bodies have been removed now.
4 dead herring gulls thrown carelessly by the side of the road. No sign of being run over. Poisoning? Can anyone take them to confirm? ///deduced.appealing.glare @sussexwildlife.bsky.social @wildjustice.bsky.social @katebradbury.bsky.social @rspbengland.bsky.social @hannahbournetaylor.bsky.social
Wow! 2 male blackbirds were having a proper fight on the ground just now then moved it into the hedge. I think the one on the shed roof has lost the territory
Came across this small hedge of blackthorn, fizzing with life, a frenzy of buzzing insects, and the delicate fragrance of the blossom was delightful. What a shame it was the only hedge for miles in the almost baron wasteland on that part of the South Downs. Some skylarks singing otherwise silence
Also if whiskey is your tipple, make sure it is peat-free. I had never thought about that until recently, to my shame, but we've just opened a delicious peat-free single malt, can't remember the name though.

This Saturday in Ovingdean - 'Everything you ever wanted to know about heat pumps'

#Brighton
Thanks, I'll have a look. But I still wonder if that would be an alternative to ASHP
Energy experts, if you have a small 2-bed house/flat and want to be gas boiler-free, how does a ASHP system compare to an infrared hot water/heating system with an infrared rads in rooms where needed. 🧵
Thanks for the article, it'll be useful for the heat pump workshop though too much technical info might bamboozle some of the residents (me too!)
If the farmland wasn't a wasteland for bees then they wouldn't need to cross the road to forage on the wilder cliff top. I wonder if they find it as scary as I do crossing that road!
Well if vehicle drivers slowed down then I think the bees would have a chance of crossing the road instead of being killed outright or buffeted by the wind turbulence. Often I find them dazed on the cycle path so I move them but too often they're squashed by the bikes.
