I have multiple advanced degrees in the social sciences dedicated at least in part to understanding media consumer behavior and the labyrinthine whorls of shipping politics continue to leave me baffled on a routine basis.

Yeah, pretty much. And the way we interact (as a culture) on social media really reinforces the idea that we SHOULD be apologizing for this sort of thing, to me. Like if we don't perform sheepishness then we're "too earnest" or something like that.

Which is pretty funny now that I think about it because my perennial complaint about Etrian games is that leveling up feels too incrementa!

It's not really absurd, it's more "sufficient," and it usually only gives a stat spread that covers one possible build. You're also starting from 0 with hero points out in the open world so building elite specs is going to go slower. It's a nice benefit but it's not game-breaking at all.
