Photo taken in Somerset August 2024 A male kestrel is a small bird of prey with a distinctive appearance, especially for someone who is partially sighted, focusing on its sounds and how it moves and where it lives. The male has a slate-grey head and tail, a brick-red back with black spots, and a creamy underside with black speckles. Its most notable behaviour is its "hovering" or "wind hovering," where it hangs still in the air by flapping its wings, often by the roadside. You can also hear the sharp, kiting, and high-pitched calls it makes.

🌍 Cape Gull (Larus dominicanus vetula) The Cape Gull, the southern African subspecies of the Kelp Gull, is a large bird with a distinctive adult appearance featuring a white head and body, a black back and wings, a yellow bill with a red spot, and dark eyes. Its distribution is primarily along the coasts of southern Africa, from Namibia to the Eastern Cape. Behaviourally, they are gregarious, sedentary scavengers and omnivores, often found near human activity like landfills and fishing operations. Four other subspecies are recognised. Coal Tit is often found around Pine trees. It also often visits gardens in a rather ‘smash and grab’ fashion, as it is often outcompeted by the larger Tit species at bird feeders. It has declined across the UK since around 2010. @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspbscience.bsky.social
