that's an interesting take. i agree that anatomy doesnt map neatly onto sex, intersex people are the biggest example of that. so many people use the old definition that doesnt respect people's use of hormones and/or other gender affirming surgery.

this is the same thing as shopping for bras. the fucking reddit calculator everyone recommends is like "are you a tranny? youre a size 38J" like give me a break. even the woke stuff is not woke enough. there is just no substantive research on our health outcomes and there need to be.

i'm a little sensitive abt this bc (trans) people have called me all sorts of things for calling myself transsexual. but i also don't really think there should be any sort of pressure for anyone to conform to any gendered expectation, even what people expect of androgyny or nb // 3rd gender people.

assimilationism is complicated from a trans perspective bc a lot of people transition to try to pass and are called assimilationists. assimilationism would be forcing a nonbinary person to say "i am a trans woman" to access hormones. or like forcing someone to act as a certain sexual orientation.

i think the perspective on this has to be moved like seventy years back to the homophile movement and the mattachine society. assimilationism is a queer political project with a history of mixed success, usually for white gay men only.

the way media broadly tries to force muslims to disavow other muslims for no other reason than to demonstrate they are "one of the good ones" feels like a legacy of slavery and racism you would think liberals would be eager to forget about.
