A piece of storytelling advice that I have heard: a story doesn’t need to be realistic, but it should be believable. I.e. if you create rules in your universe, follow them and don’t make a reader feel tricked.
Anyway, whoever wrote this season of the United States clearly doesn’t like that rule.
