I just realized, Lu and Mari not only sound like Luigi and Mario, but when you put the names together, it's "Lumari" which sounds like "Lumalee". Lu/Lubba's name is even Ru/Ruba in Japanese which coresponds with the Japanese name for Lumalee in modern appearances, "Rumari".

After comparing version 1.0.0 of Galaxy 1 and 2 to version 1.3.1, I can confirm that the changes apply to specifically this tab within the home menu

Lubba will not be present in the Virtual Boy - Nintendo Classics app. This is because the Virtual Boy was discontinued in 1996 whereas Super Mario Galaxy 2 was released in 2010.
