I’m so glad you picked up on it. I was like, “Did he really just say that?!”

“and that’s from your husband” might be the funniest thing I’ve ever heard on a podcast

Maybe I should never watch it again, just in case

That is a shame! FWIW I hated it when I saw it on release, aged 14. It just wasn’t like his earlier films at all. But rewatching it later as an adult, I found it resonated so much more and the other films no longer appealed.

Dave, you better not be criticising Cable Guy, I swear to God

I say it how’s it’s written, obviously.

Baby Steps, the literal walking simulator gone viral, has a special cutscene for those who tend to skip cutscenes... that's 28 minutes long.

Yes, and the time it takes to achieve that again… Mortality becomes a problem when you’re 80

I say all this having not read the article (boo, I know) but I can't help but feel this is a factor as sad and depressing as it may be.

I wonder how much this is an age/time thing for him (and maybe others). Miller lost years to Fury Road, in part due to the difficulties of practical filmmaking tied to the location choice and high standards. He's now 80 and presumably keen to squeeze a few more movies out much quicker...

Totally! The other golden rule we had making mags in the internet age was to not use screenshots taken by others (your own screens and PR shots only)

Speaking as someone who worked in games mags for many years in the UK, we were always advised that “fair use” did not exist. However, common sense does. You can’t really talk about games without showing them, so we took our chances. In the six years I was there, not a single publisher complained.

Some inappropriately creepy golf content - Sente Mini Golf (1986) has DIP switches that add photos of missing children to the attract mode (and to enable a "LOCATED" message per kid). These profiles were replaced with new ones in updated ROMs.

Modern operators seem to leave them on, a lot. 😨
A Reddit post from r/creepygaming by user SuperCamouflageShark - I saw these missing child reports on the attract mode of a Sente Mini-Golf arcade machine recently.

The photo is of a Sente Mini Golf machine, displaying black-and-white photographs of missing children: Tahj Allen Merriman, and Steven Phillip Curtis. Their profiles are filled out in red text. Another photograph of a different Sente Mini Golf machine, displaying the same photos of missing children. Sente Mini Golf running under MAME, with the DIP Switches menu showing. DIP switches 3, 4, and 5 configure whether the missing children are displayed in the attract mode, with switches 4 and 5 showing or hiding a "LOCATED" stamp over the respective kid's photo. Screenshot of Sente Mini Golf running under MAME; this screen shows two different missing children: Malinda Marie Smith and April Rose Yates. For the sake of demonstration I have enabled the "LOCATED" flag on the kid on the right. (DISCLAIMER: I do not have any information on whether April was located or not. This is strictly a demonstration and is not intended as documentation of a real event.)

New blog post time!

This week's game is Zombie Incident, a MSX platformer with a 3DS remake that only uses one button, but adds nonlinearity and RPG-esque wrinkles to spice things up. Said wrinkles don't stop repetition from kicking in eventually, but the ideas sure are neat!

Zombie Incident
I’m probably being a bit harsh considering the origins of this game and the limitations of the MSX, but I suppose I’m doing that because I truly love the ideas being presented here. I can envision …

Interesting. I've never heard of the second one. The fact it's made such an impression has instantly put it on my radar.

What if I told you I have written a GIANT article about the whole STS series, including the new one for this month's Retro Gamer?

Did you know I wrote a book about the origins of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, console RPGs, and their rise to success in North America?

This broadcast on UK TV when I was a kid, long before I knew what anime was. I absolutely loved it and feel quite lucky it was so readily available.
