🌈*Queer terminology provision in Irish - challenges and opportunities going forward*

📆Déardaoin 13ú
🕑14.00 am na hÉireann

Eolas agus nasc Zoom: www.eaft-aet.net/en/actualita...
Irish-language terminology has seen a significant increase over the past two decades. At a national level in Ireland, measures have been taken to ensure that specialist domains in the Irish language are catered for, providing translators, legislators, journalists, and anyone working in the Irish-language sector with the necessary resources for specific terminology.

One field that has witnessed a more grassroots approach in the Irish language in recent years is LGBTQ+ terminology. This presentation aims to give a brief overview of the current status of queer terminology provision in Ireland and compare these efforts to other Celtic languages, notably Scottish Gaelic and Welsh. As part of this overview, the author will discuss the current efforts in queer terminology provision, particularly those by AerachAiteachGaelach (AAG).

AerachAiteachGaelach (or GayQueerIrish) is an arts collective whose main aim is to promote the Irish language through various media and arts projects across Ireland. The collective was initially established to highlight the diverse range of queer talent within the Irish language, from original plays to poetry. Recently, the collective has sought to create a working group or ‘meitheal’ to further enhance the provision of queer terminology in the Irish language.

While previous lexicons in the Irish language focused more on traditional terminology, especially in areas needing further development, the current work emphasises colloquial and community-specific language. This presentation will highlight work currently being carried out by this working group and outline some of the challenges facing the language in the LGBTQ+ domain. As part of the presentation, the author would welcome the opportunity to hear about and discuss similar projects in other languages.
