What is it about him that you’re not keen on?

That is unexpectedly funny

Maddison is providing a seemingly unprecedented level of detail about his injury and recovery process. No question this will help other people going through similar situations. Huge credit to him
garethtbij.bsky.social
Massive props to Maddison for opening up like this. Even if you don’t have any interest in football this is worth a watch to understand how a sportsperson responds to a career-threatening injury. A stark reminder, as many seem to need, that they are human beings too youtu.be/Lk3go4wD1QY?...

My first thought after last night's game was whether Spence would post about Johnson. I figured he wouldn't but, fair play, he does not discriminate

If a "younger" reporter files me a story containing an error like that and we end up publishing it, then ultimately that's on me. I'd get very short shrift if I blamed them for it, and rightly so
garethtbij.bsky.social
Poor form to blame "younger producers". Do they not have fact-checking processes that should have spotted this basic factual error? Either way, more experienced staff should have caught it

I can imagine my next news meeting.

‘Can you pull together a primmer on…’

‘Sorry, do you mean primer?’

I can’t wait to pronounce it primmer in public and be met with a room full of blank faces (or sniggering)

Here’s a primer on ‘primer.’

It’s pronounced ‘PRIMM-er’ if you mean “a small book” or “a short informative piece of writing.”

It’s pronounced ‘PRY-mer’ if you mean “an initial coat of paint.”

I'm fully behind that sentiment

A lot of strong words there. Does he have shortcomings as a manager? Absolutely. As a person? Feels harsh. I agree that what's happened supports the case for sacking him, but to take enjoyment from him struggling? That I don't get. It comes across as churlish/unnecessarily disrespectful

And while I'm moaning about football: I've listened to two prominent Spurs pods this week which have both asked whether fans should be enjoying Ange's struggles at Forest. For the life of me I don't know why anyone would (or that it needed asking). He won our first trophy in nearly 20 years ffs

I know moaning about player ratings is for the birds, but the 6/10 the BBC gave Djed Spence for his full England debut is very miserly. Kept a clean sheet, had his winger in his pocket and contributed going forward on numerous occasions. He keeps this up and he may well make the WC squad

I love Ben Davies. He’s a model pro and solid defender. But he hasn’t played a minute of football for Tottenham so far this season. Tonight is an incredibly tough task

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

I try to do as much of the editing process away from screens, particularly the first read of a story, as I'm better able to focus and take it all in when working with hard copy. To level-up my analogue game I've got a fancy new dictionary. It might just be the best thing I've bought all year

I'm glad the government will not introduce employment tribunal fees, but it's not true that "everyone, no matter their income" can get "access to justice" under the current system.

The barriers are endless & if you overcome them & win, you still might not even get the money you are owed
