Rereading the Tale of Sindbad the Sailor, this time in Yasmine Seale's superb translation of the Arabian Nights, & wondering why it took me so long see that the whole cave sequence in 'Tom Sawyer' is based on Sindbad's 4th voyage.

What’s hilarious for me about this joke, cited here as Danish from WWII, is that I first heard it in the 80s in Hebrew, as an example of dark Israeli political humor.
A guy buys a newspaper every day, reads the front page then throws it away

Finally, the news agent couldn’t take it, how come he never got past the front page?

I’m looking for the obituaries, the man said

Obits are inside the paper, said the newsagent

Not the one I’m looking for, said the man

I hope the minority of PR people who send useful things know that the reason I often don't reply is that my inbox is flooded with garbage 24/7, and no matter how many lists I unsubscribe to or how many filters I set up or how many messages I mark as spam, there is never less garbage

Broadway Weekly on ‘November 4’: "Danny Paller (Music and Lyrics) and Myra Noveck (Book) tell the story of Rabin's last month in this engrossing musical... 2025 desperately needs the wisdom of 1990s Rabin who wanted Israel to put the possibility of peace ahead of the ineradicability of violence."

That’s precisely why this moment matters. When someone who was long seen as “untouchable” is finally detained, it chips away at the public’s deep-rooted sense that the state can’t enforce the law. It restores a measure of trust, however fragile, in state institutions.

The point of having a standards editor is that you bring in a skilled, disinterested person to read or watch a story and point out possible bias, errors and lapses.

The actual story editors can miss those things because they're so closely tied to the production and reporting of the piece.
“I’ve been hearing that standards will be eliminated or severely cut back. Bari has told people that she wants to get rid of standards and is shocked that they have so much power. She also asked openly, ‘What’s the point of standards?’” one CBS source said.

Update: In 3 recent editorials, WaPo failed to disclose owner Jeff Bezos's interest in the matter under discussion.

WaPo added one disclosure after @bgrueskin.bsky.social called it out.

Two weeks after my story, the other two editorials still have none. And the paper still won't say why
'Washington Post' editorials omit a key disclosure: Bezos' financial ties
Three times in the past two weeks, editorials at the 'Washington Post' failed to disclose that they focused on matters in which owner Jeff Bezos had a material interest.

This has always seemed like the key issue. Bezos and Lewis, understandably, want the Post to be profitable. But the actions they've taken with Opinion (killing the Kamala endorsement, firing their top talent, etc) have consistently undermined that strategy. bsky.app/profile/dave...
Will Lewis gets up every day asking: How can I get more suburban DC readers to cancel their subscriptions? It's called grindset and you wouldn't understand.
In a nearly illiterate editorial, WaPo defends Trump's ballroom project, without revealing the fact that the paper's owner, Jeff Bezos, is a principal funder of the project. Shameful conduct all around. bsky.app/profile/bgru...
