Basically yeah. As far as I understand, each component is serialized to the point of absurdity. If you put a part from a laptop marked stolen into another, it’ll lock down and refuse to work.
That or they were paranoid about the tracking capability, which even if it sucks, it was good enough lol

I had accepted my fate that the laptop was gone forever due to my stupidity. Was able to learn several good lessons for the next big trip I do.

They gave me some soda, a large bottle of cold sparking water, bought me a coffee and made 100% sure I got on the next train back to where I was going.

I was able to replace the clothes I lost as I went on my way towards Greece.

My new friend stuck his arm in there, rummaged around and fished it out. I was so incredibly happy to see that thing again. Gave the man a huge hug. The other two workers were really surprised as well. The shared relief and happiness was incredible lol.

The laptop was completely untouched & working

My Google Translate wasn’t working. Though I was able to gesture enough to get the idea and goal somewhat explained. The help of the word “GPS” is what really got it going.

There was one more full dumpster to look through. I was ready to jump in that one.

The station operators were kind enough to give me some of their nice railway gloves, so at least I had some hand protection.

All the digging had attracted a couple workers. Why is there this tourist digging in our dumpsters?

(In retrospect, I maybe could’ve used a BlueTooth signal strength app to pinpoint which dumpster? Though I had no internet service and the previously installed app had uninstalled itself from inactivity)

So I had to just methodically jump in each dumpster and start digging.

To my dismay, the location on the map was somewhat what I was expecting. A dumpster. Or a few of them to be specific.
My one and only complaint is that MacBooks don’t have the same tracking chip as AirTags/iPhones.
All it could tell me is that it was nearby.

I had to move on. I took the next train onwards to Romania.
The next day I got a ping on find my that my laptop had been seen!
It was still at the same train station as yesterday, but suspiciously close to a small building.

Undeterred and hopeful, I immediately took the next train back.

Dealing with Hungarian police was a pleasant experience. They must’ve sent 10 officers out in this small village of 50 people.
They were thorough, but ultimately couldn’t help me.

I was the only person on the train, and was gone for 3 minutes before I realized my mistake.
I went back to find it gone. Used an AirTag to trace it to a completely different carriage, shoved under a seat.
It was empty. All my clothes, plus laptop were gone.

I never thought I’d be dumpster diving in a rural town in southern eastern Hungary… But I found my stolen laptop with the help of this kind soul!

Context: In a tired haze I was rushed off a train to switch trains. I left my suitcase in the overhead storage.

My flight home yesterday was diverted from PHX to LAX :(
We did loops in the sky for around half an hour before low fuel.

Yeah they’re really quite a spectacular battery chemistry. Finally something that can be utilized 0-100 daily for more than a decade lol

That particular pack is 5kWh.
I’m looking into making a custom 48v (52v) pack with 16 3.2v prismatic cells which would make for a 16kWh pack.

lol yep, it’s a great amount of energy at the expense of it being a little more bulky

Though I do plan on making some custom 48V packs from prismatic cells here in the near future.
It’s less than half the price per watt!
