Our new European-scale study shows that noise impairs owl occupancy and reproduction. Light pollution also impairs both traits, but its effect on reproduction changes based on road proximity, decreasing closer to roads

🚨New paper out
Our study reveals how barn owl parents coordinate nightly chick feeding. Females step up when males underperform & pairs that meet more often at the nest share work more equally boosting chick survival🦉

First paper from our tawny owl project finally out! Great European-wide collaboration, thanks to all participants who have kindly contributed their data. We found that noise negatively affects occupancy and breeding success, while the effects of light pollution depended on the distance to roads.

Our new paper in @ecol-evol.bsky.social shows that noise reduces owl prey detectability and it generates adverse effects already at an early life stage, with potential carry-over effects on adulthood. Paper: doi.org/10.1002/ece3...

Experimental Exposure to Noise Affects Hunting Behavior Already From a Young Age in a Nocturnal Acoustic Predator
This study experimentally investigates the effect of traffic noise on the hunting behavior of young and subadult Tawny Owls (Strix aluco). We show that noise lowers the rate of prey detection and inc....

The dark side of bright lights
LED light overuse is pushing brightness up 10% each year, faster than the global average, threatening wildlife, human life and the dark sky.

Busy days with Tawny Owl chicks around Glasgow! 🦉

On average, Tawny Owls lay 2-3 eggs and incubation lasts 28-30 days. Chicks will then fledge around 35-38 days old.

More Tawnies on eggs in our nestboxes around Glasgow! 🦉

Tawny Owls are forest owls, but they also occur in urban parks. They nest in tree cavities, but they can also readily use nestboxes for this purpose, especially when tree cavities are not available.

It's spring again and Tawny Owls have started breeding in Glasgow! 🦉

The first adult owls of the season have been captured, ringed and tagged with biologgers, aiming to understand how they cope with roads, light & noise pollution in the urban environment.
