In the Victorian language of the flowers, juniper is the emblem of asylum, thanks to its appearance in verse 1 Kings 19:4-5 of the Old Testament. But did you know this is based on a mistranslation in the King James Bible? The real source of Elijah's asylum is the white broom, Retama raetam.

In Phillips' Floral Emblems, he lists off the then-recently re-established plant emblems of the Scottish Highland clans - I've started updating them, beginning in this batch with birch, oak, bog myrtle, alder, hazel, goat willow, holly, purple foxglove, white poplar, broom, yew, and ivy.

The Cockscomb. Singularity. Celosia argentea L. (1753) variety cristata. Accompanied by a botanical illustration of a lavish red cockscomb flower, resembling a rooster's crest. Singularity. This unusually-shaped variety of Celosia, believed to have originated in India, looks like a rooster's comb. Not only does this flower have its own unique style, but 'cockscomb' was once a derisive term for a dandy or a fancy, flashy man - they both have the individuality necessary to make this the emblem of singularity. True singularity is a wonder to behold... an etching of a frazzled man, seen from behind as he climbs a staircase. He is wearing evening wear, a tailcoat with huge sleeves, a flat black hat, and has his hair aggressively parted into two fluffed wings, while his long moustache sticks out at angles making his silhouette look like a butterfly.

Jambu is cultivated for culinary purposes, and has an unusual flavour described as tingling, cooling, or numbing, giving them the colloquial name of 'buzz buttons'.'

Of the Primrose...

In countless #languageofflowers books from the 1800s, and repeated in the contemporary online, you can find a story about the primrose (Primula vulgaris) being anciently called "Paralysis" after a beautiful youth, #Paralisos, the son of #Priapus and #Flora.
