In the Victorian language of the flowers, juniper is the emblem of asylum, thanks to its appearance in verse 1 Kings 19:4-5 of the Old Testament. But did you know this is based on a mistranslation in the King James Bible? The real source of Elijah's asylum is the white broom, Retama raetam.

In Phillips' Floral Emblems, he lists off the then-recently re-established plant emblems of the Scottish Highland clans - I've started updating them, beginning in this batch with birch, oak, bog myrtle, alder, hazel, goat willow, holly, purple foxglove, white poplar, broom, yew, and ivy.

Of the Primrose...

In countless #languageofflowers books from the 1800s, and repeated in the contemporary online, you can find a story about the primrose (Primula vulgaris) being anciently called "Paralysis" after a beautiful youth, #Paralisos, the son of #Priapus and #Flora.
