When @mikesamba.bsky.social published his climate research report, he didn't expect it to go viral in the right-wing media!

It was such a pleasure to interview my cousin @mikesamba.bsky.social for the podcast. He's one of the brightest minds in Canadian climate finance (ok, ok, maybe I'm biased here).

The last few months have been beautiful, terrifying, exhausting, challenging, rewarding, and cute AF.

The summer was hard in Toronto. Heat waves. Smoke from wildfires. Being a new parent comes with its own kind of cabin fever, but climate change adds another layer.

Next up is electrified transport! This was barely a scratch in the total number back in 2009, but it grew 20%+ last year! EVs and e-bikes are the majority of the $760 billion 2024 figure, with $2.77 trillion since 2015.
May 4, 2025 at 3:16 PM
First up is Water! Water infrastructure has been the steadiest green sector. Its market size was $346 billion in 2024 and $2.8 trillion since 2015.

I'm preparing for an update to the Green Transition Scoreboard research report. I started aggregating investments in the global green economy back in 2009 with my mentor, Hazel Henderson. The first report found over $1 trillion flowing into green sectors!!

Green bonds have remained incredibly resilient amidst the recent backlash against ESG. On tomorrow’s show, I’m interviewing Simon Senécal from AlphaFixe Capital, the sub-adviser for the National Bank Sustainable Canadian Bond ETF (NSCB), which has almost $3 billion in assets under management!

Wondering WTF is going on with these markets? Check out the market update I did at the start of last night's webinar. TLDR: take a deep breath and zoom out - stay calm & rebalance!

Lots of people are asking me about divesting from Tesla!

I had fun on CBC Vancouver talking about ethical investing. 4-minute video in reply

1/ Big news—I’m having a baby! 🎉This June, my wife and I will welcome our daughter into the world, and life is about to change in ways I can’t fully comprehend yet.

I'm happy to see @markcarneyforpm.bsky.social take the helm of the federal Liberal party!

I don't expect him to talk about sustainable finance much on the campaign trail, but I know it'll be a priority if he gets to govern.

Has anyone read his book Value(s)? I'd love to hear thoughts…

Is it time to break up with your investment advisor?

Too many people stay with an investment advisor who no longer aligns with their values, charges high fees, or simply isn’t providing the service they deserve.

Averages mean nothing. We need a Volatility Index for weather / climate
It is both the case that the 2% of the planet that is it United States is remarkably frigid at the moment, and that the world as a whole is at record-warm levels for this day of the year:

Waking up in 2025 feels surreal. Every day, I wake up to a new crisis - L.A. on fire; hospitals in Gaza being reduced to rubble; companies rolling back DEI initiatives and climate pledges. 🧵

Insurance markets are the first to internalize climate risk, followed by the bond market. Equity markets are lagging far behind IMO

Follow the (insurance) money
Disasters caused an estimated $140 billion in insured losses in 2024 – Insurer Munich Re "said the development shows that "climate change is showing its claws" as global temperatures continue to rise, contributing to more frequent and extreme weather events." www.reuters.com/business/fin...
Climate change shows 'claws' with rising costs for disasters, Munich Re says
Hurricanes, storms, floods and other natural disasters caused an estimated $140 billion in insured losses in 2024, up from 2023 and one of the costliest years on record, Munich Re said on Thursday.

If you want to know what's happening with climate change, listen to the insurers - they know their shit and are on top of climate risks.
easy to read "insurers stopped covering homes in California right before these fires" as something sinister, but from covering this industry, I gotta say I think it's the opposite: no one is more aware of increased risk due to climate change than insurers

www.businessinsider.com/california-f...
Insurers dropped fire coverage for California homes months ago. Now, wildfires are claiming more houses in Los Angeles.
Some insurers have scaled back their coverage in California because of wildfires over the past few years, creating a challenge for rebuilding.
